Merry 在英文里有'愉悦的、快乐的' 意思，go round 是指“转圈”的举动，合起来意思是‘快乐的转圈’。
“Merry-go-round” 最早来自于“Carousel” 这个单词，而这个单词的历史可以追溯到12世纪。为了测试骑手的技能而采用的一种方式。法国在17世纪将测试骑术的方式改进，发明了现在旋转木马的雏形，骑士们坐在木马上在旋转的过程中用矛枪刺机器外部上的小铜环，以示技艺精湛。在1700's 至1800's 间，这个机器被命名为““Carousel”，亨利四世在位时，该机器被用作为娱乐设施。
