NO SPITING? 在西方人的习惯里随地吐痰是很不文明，很不礼貌的。People rarely spit. Therefore, you will never see such a sign anywhere in a Western country. If your purpose is to warn people in your city not to spit, put on a Chinese sign ONLY.If your purpose is to warn foreign vistors to your city not to spit, put on a English sign "NO SPITTING!"If your purpose is to remind foreign visitors that people in your city often spit in the street, put on a English sign "NO SPITTING!"

应该是NO SPITING !在西方人的习惯里随地吐痰是很不文明，很不礼貌的。因此说这话用的是禁止的口吻。并不象中文的习惯还用“请勿”。所以，翻译时凡是加上“please”的均不正确。还有“随地”一般也不用直译。我们翻译课时这句曾作为例句教授专门讲过的。我的很多同学就受中文习惯的影响而犯了“望文生意”的毛病。
