兔子向动物们吹嘘自己的奔跑速度，动物们有的为它喝彩，有的感到十分无聊。这时，乌龟却说，自己能在跑步上打败兔子，并邀请兔子与之一战。比赛开始了，兔子跑得很快，一会儿乌龟就落在了后面，兔子便在一棵树下打起盹来。乌龟爬啊爬，它能战胜兔子吗？
Welcome to ALO7’s Power to Learn. Today’s story is The Tortoise and the Hare, retold by Jenny Lam and Sheila Higginson, and narrated by Judy Luxton.
HOP! HOP! HOP! Rabbit jumped very fast.
HIPPITY! HOPPITY! HOP! HOP! Rabbit jumped even faster.
“Look at me,” bragged Rabbit. “I am the fastest!”
His animal friends watched. Some cheered. Some were bored. They had seen Rabbit run many times before.
“Here he goes again,” said Cat. “Rabbit is always running.”
“And he is always bragging about being the fastest runner,” said Owl.
“He does run fast,” said Monkey.
Tortoise walked up slowly to the other animals.
Tortoise spoke slowly. “Is Rabbit bragging about being the fastest runner again?” he asked.
The animals nodded their heads yes.
“I will challenge Rabbit to a race. I can beat him,” said Tortoise calmly.
All the animals got excited. “A race!” they cried.
Rabbit laughed. “All right. Let’s race. I will win anyway.”
Tortoise and Rabbit went to the starting line.
“On your mark. Get set. Go!” cried Owl. He flapped his wings! Rabbit and Tortoise crossed the starting line. The race began!
Rabbit ran fast. He hopped, and he ran. He hopped again. He ran even faster.
Rabbit was far ahead of Tortoise. He kept running. He kept hopping.
He stopped by a tree. He looked behind him. Where was Tortoise?
Tortoise walked slowly. He was far behind.
Rabbit yelled, “Hey, how do you expect to beat me? You are walking so slowly! You will never beat me. You will never win!”
Rabbit sat down under the tree.
“I will take a rest,” said Rabbit. “Tortoise is slow. He will never catch up. I have plenty of time to relax.”
Rabbit rested under the tree. He got comfortable. Then he stretched out.
Soon he was lying flat on the ground. He fell asleep. He snored loudly.
Tortoise walked slowly. He kept walking. And walking. And walking.
He walked to the tree where Rabbit was sleeping. He did not stop. He kept walking and walking and walking.
Tortoise never stopped. He didn’t take a rest. He just walked.
He kept walking until he got to the finish line.
All the animals cheered. They were amazed that Tortoise won. He never gave up. He just kept walking and walking and walking.
The cheering was very loud. It woke Rabbit. He jumped up from his sleep!
“What happened? What’s that noise?” asked Rabbit. He began to run.
He ran faster and faster and faster. But he was too late. Tortoise had already crossed the finish line. Tortoise won the race.

第一段：
On a vacation trip， Duke Huan of the state of Qi came to the ruin of the capital of Guo
Shi ， which perished long ago.
译文：齐桓公出游途中，来到已经灭亡许久的郭氏都城的废墟。
第二段：
Seeing the desolate and bleak prospects of broken tiles， collapsed walls， and clusters
of weeds， he could not help asking the local people about the reason of the ruin of Guo Shi.
译文：看到瓦砾残垣、杂草丛生的萧条景象，忍不住问当地百姓郭氏灭亡的原因。
第三段：
They replied，"Guo Shi was fond of doing good deeds， and averse to evildoing， which led to the perdition."
译文：百姓们回答说："郭氏由于喜爱善行善事。厌恶邪恶丑行而导致灭亡。"
第四段：
When the Duke could not understand the answer， people explained ，" Though he
liked doing good， he had never been able to do so; though he hated
evildoing， never could he help not participating.That caused the ruin of his capital."
译文：齐桓公不能理解这种回答，百姓们便解释说："郭氏虽然喜爱善行善事，但从来都不能做到；尽管厌恶邪恶丑行，却总是忍不住参与其中。这就是他的都城变成废墟的原因。"

One day， a monkey rides his bike near the river.
译文：一天，一只猴子在河边骑车。
This time he sees a lion under a tree, The lion runs at him.
译文：这时他看见树下有一只狮子，狮子向他跑来。
He is afraid and falls into the river.
译文：他十分的害怕，掉进河里。
He can’t swim, He shouts.
译文：他不会游泳，大叫起来。
The rabbit hears him, He jumps into the river, The rabbit swims to the monkey， but
he can’t help him.
译文：兔子听见了，跳进水里，但他却没有办法救猴子。
Luckily， an elephant es along.

He is very strong, He helps the rabbit and monkey.

A Man and a Satyr having struck up an acquaintance， sat down together to eat.

The day being wintry and cold， the Man put his fingers to his mouse and blew opon them.

"What's that for， my friend?" asked the Satyr.

" My hands are so cold，" said the Man， "I do it to warm them."

"And what's the meaning of that， now?" said the Satyr.

"Oh，" replied the Man， "my porridge is so hot， I do it to cool it."

"Nay， then，" said the Satyr， "from this moment I renounce your friendship， for I
will have nothing to do with one who blows hot and cold with the same mouse."

五、英语小故事：驴和蚱蜢
Ass having heard some Grasshoppers chirping， was highly enchanted; and， desiring
to possess the same charms of melody， demanded what sort of food they lived
on， to give them such beautiful voices.
译文：一只驴听到几只蚱蜢在叫，便觉得很趣味；于是也想得到同样趣味的音调，便问蚱蜢吃什么东西过活，以至于能有这样优美的声音。
They replied， "The dew." The Ass resolved that he would only live upon dew， and in
a short time died of hunger.
译文：蚱蜢说：「露水。」驴子听了，从此以后也单吃露水过活，不久便饿死了。
