这种翻译最难，因为在两个语言当中没有任何类似的地方，因此翻译出来时候就必须解释，有时候可能还要讲故事。比如: 负荆请罪offer a humble apology 字面上的意思是谦虚的道歉。但是这样翻译就完全失去了“负荆请罪”这个这个成语所包括的文化与历史内涵。再比如，走马观花 give a hurried and cursory glance at，skin the surface 这样翻译外国人当然可以理解，但是和“负荆请罪”一样，原文的味道没有了。

就是直译，也就是英语里面没有现成的对应说法，但是用英语词句直接翻译过去，别人也能明白这是什么意思。比如说：百闻不如一见（可以说Seeing is beliving,也可以说One look is worth one thousand words.）、和气生财（Harmony brings wealth.）。

成语的对外翻译是一件非常不容易的事儿，及要尽量保持成语的原汁原味，又要努力使外国人能够看得懂，不至于产生歧义。中国成语的“汉翻英”大致可以基本对等。也就是说，汉语的成语在翻译事，基本上可以找到相对应的英语习语或者俗语。这种翻译比较好处理。比如: 有志者，事竟成。Where there's a will, there's a way.
