According to a survey, in recent years, the monthly expenditure of a college student has been on the sharp rise. Many college students spend money like water and have no concept of thrift in their mind. They take it for granted that they spend money from their parents before they enter into society.

我刚好在准备四六级的时候复习了这三个单词的区别！虽然都表达花费的含义，但是这三个单词在构成句子时对主语和宾语的要求都不一样，这也是在用法上最大的区别。

虽然三者都表示”花费“的含义，但所用主语和宾语不同。cost 的主语通常是事物或形式主语 it，宾语一般为时间或金钱，且不能用于被动语态；spend的主语通常是人，而不能是事物，宾语则一般为时间或金钱；pay的主语通常是人，而宾语一般是金钱。在实际使用时，我们一般根据不同的主语和宾语来选择相应的单词。
1、cost的用法总结
①sth.+cost+sb.+时间/金钱/力气句型。例如：
The notebook costs me 10 yuan.
翻译：这本笔记本花了我10元。
②at the cost of短语表示”以……为代价“的含义。例如：
The economy should not be developed at the cost of destroying the environment.
翻译：经济发展不能以破坏生态环境为代价。
③at all cost短语表示”不惜一切代价，无论如何“的含义。例如：
I would meet you at all cost！
翻译：我会不惜一切代价见到你！

相同点：均含“花费”之意。
不同点：cost指花费时间、金钱、劳力等。其主语是物，而不能由人充当，也不用被动形式。pay“付款、给……报酬”，它可作及物动词也可作不及物动词。spend普通用词，与cost基本同义，但主语必须是人。
【用法区别】
cost作“花费”“付出代价”解时,不用于被动结构,主语通常是物或事物。接名词或代词作宾语时,宾语为金钱、时间、精力等。接双宾语时,直接宾语为金钱、时间、精力等,间接宾语则总是人。作“计算费用”“估算”解时主语一定是人,且可用于被动结构。
pay的基本意思是“付给”“付出”,指某人买东西或做某事所花费的金钱。引申可表示为“给予”。pay既可用作及物动词,也可用作不及物动词。
spend的基本意思是“花费时间、精力或金钱”,可指人使用、花费金钱,度过时光,也可指某人、物、事使尽〔耗光〕力量、能量、弹药等,还可指人在某物、事方面花费金钱、精力、时间等。spend可用作不及物动词,也可用作及物动词。
