三、独立子句是可以成为完整句子的一串单词。把两个完整的句子连接成一个长句时，可以在它们之间加一个分号。

Example:This could be a complete sentence;this could be another one.（例如：这边的可以是一个完整的句子；这边的可以是另一个。）

Example:Twelve workers started the project;only five remain.（例如：这个项目开始有12个工人，留在那里的只有5人。）

性质：

大句中被冒号、破折号、括号、引号分隔出来的并列分句有相对的独立性，中间可根据需要使用分号。

冒号后的并列分句做大句的宾语。冒号前是分说，冒号后是总说，两句的分说部分是由并列分句组成。在大句中用破折号引出的解释说明部分是并列分句，用分号分隔。

分项列举各项如果是分句，自然可以用分号。在单句中冒号引出的并列短语用于分项列举，为了使分项的性质显得突出，也可以用分号分隔。
