cyclone是气旋，是个大类，按地区分有温带气旋、热带气旋、极地气旋等。其中，热带气旋是Tropical Cyclone（TC）。TC中有一部分达到足够风力强度的，称为台风（Typhoon）/飓风（hurricane）。至于说，到底叫台风还是飓风，这取决于强度和地区：在中国以及西北太平洋沿岸国家（日本、韩国、越南、菲律宾等），风力达到12级（118km/hr）以上的TC叫做台风；在大西洋和东北太平洋沿岸国家（加拿大、美国等），风力达到11级（104km/hr）以上的TC叫做飓风。Tornado是龙卷风。龙卷风和台风有很大区别，最明显的区别就是：身为一个中国人，大家应该有感受，我国是台风高发国，经常有台风来袭的警报和新闻；但我国不太有龙卷风，事实上世界上大部分龙卷风都跑到美国去了……另外，台风比龙卷风大，台风动辄百公里、千公里；而龙卷风通常只有几米-几百米。还有，台风比龙卷风持续时间长，台风的时间单位是天，而龙卷风是分钟。cyclone是大类，里面包含太多东西，Tornado只是其中一种。用cyclone来称呼Tornado，就像用蔬菜来称呼西红柿一样，虽然西红柿的确是一种蔬菜，但是这真的太不准确了。况且，也不是所有的龙卷风都是气旋。因为龙卷风规模较小，受科里奥利力（地转偏向力）的直接影响也较小，所以约有1%的龙卷风以反气旋（anti-cyclone）方式旋转，即在北半球顺时针转、在南半球逆时针转。这也是台风与龙卷风的重要区别之一：台风规模较大，受科里奥利力的影响较大，全都作气旋式旋转，即在北半球逆时针转、在南半球顺时针转。Twister也是龙卷风。美国著名的灾难片《龙卷风》英文名字就是《Twister》。感觉上Tornado似乎比Twister更加正式一些。

When I was ten years old, I met a typhoon. It really was afrightening typhoon. That evening was so dark. I still can't forget it. It was a rainy day. Although it was early, the sky was very dark. I was walking in the street with my mother. We were going home. The wind blew more and more strongly. We felt the difference. We started to run fast in order to go home in no time. But the wind was still faster than feet. Suddenly, lots of litter was blown away. The typhoon blew up.We couldn't hold the umbrella. It was raining heavily and we were all wet. Cold and fright went through our bodies. The big trees began to shake. Leaves fell down. We couldn't breathe. The wind blew in our face.It was so sharp. I was afraid I would be blown away, too.
