因为Confucius的意思是“孔夫子”，孔子本命叫孔丘，别称就是孔子、尼父、孔夫子。
孔子生而七漏，头上圩顶（意为头顶凹陷），而又因其母曾祷于尼丘山，故名“丘”，字“仲尼”。鲁昭公五年（公元前537年），孔子已意识到要努力学习做人与生活之本领，所以称自己虽然已经十五岁了，但志向在于做学问。

美学思想
孔子的美学思想核心为“美”和“善”的统一，也是形式与内容的统一。孔子提倡“诗教”，即把文学艺术和政治道德结合起来，把文学艺术当作改变社会和政治的手段，陶冶情操的重要方式。并且孔子认为，一个完人，应该在诗、礼、乐修身成性。孔子的美学思想对后世的文艺理论影响巨大。
孔子在易学中明确提出了“美在其中”“见仁见智”等著名美学命题。由人民出版社出版的《童子问易》在易宗基础上提出了美宗——阳刚、阴柔之美；生命之美；自由之美；中和之美。认为“阴阳之美、生命之美、自由之美、中和之美可谓是美学之宗”。
