汉语现在是世界上用作本族语人数最多的语言。汉语与西方语言的一个重要区别在于它是以方块字(character)而不是以字母构成的。目前仍在使用的书写系统中，汉语是最古老的。在中国，来自不同地区的人可能听不懂对方的方言，但由于汉字有统一的书写形式，他们交流起来几乎没有任何困难。汉语历史上对团结中华民族发挥了重要作用。今天，随着中国经济的快速增长和全球影响力的增强，越来越多其他国家的人也开始学习汉语。

The Chinese language is used as native language by the greatest number of people in the world. One of the significant distinctions between Chinese and Western languages lies in that it is composed of characters rather than letters. The Chinese language is the oldest writing system still in use. In China, although people from different regions may not understand each other's dialects, they have little difficulty in communicating because Chinese characters are written in a uniform form. The Chinese language has played quite an important role in the unification of the Chinese nation in history. HSK6级在中国人来说和小升初考试差不多。

中国汉语水平考试（HSK）是测量母语非汉语者的汉语水平而设立的国家级标准化考试。HSK（六级）成绩分为听力、阅读、书写三部分，各项满分均为100分，合格分数线是180分。

汉语水平考试由国家汉办与孔子学院总部设计研制，国家汉办是中华人民共和国教育部直属事业单位。国家汉办开发和实施汉语水平考试，包括基础汉语水平考试，初、中等汉语水平考试〔简写为HSK（初、中等）和高等汉语水平考试。

HSK每年定期在中国国内和海外举办，凡考试成绩达到规定标准者，可获得相应等级的《汉语水平证书》。中国教育部设立国家汉语水平考试委员会，该委员会全权领导汉语水平考试，并颁发汉语水平证书。
