英文标点的来源

西方标点源于古希腊。林著说，公元前5世纪的希腊铭文，用词连写，只是偶尔用直行的二连点和三连点分隔词句。

大学者亚里士多德（前384～前322年）在《修辞学》中提到哲学家赫拉克利特（前540～前470年）的著作因为连写难以断句。林著指出西方新式标点系统的奠基人是意大利语法学家和出版家A.马努提乌斯（约1450～1515年）。

他以语法原则取代诵读原则制定五种印刷标点：逗号（，）、分号（；）、冒号（：）、句号（.）和问号（？）。他的家族在百年间出书近千种，行销欧洲各地，这几种基本标点为各语种普遍采用。欧洲各语种也逐渐形成自己的标点体系，英语标点是在18世纪晚期才完备的。
