Festivals are celebrated by people all over the world. Although they differ in their way of celebrations, joy is the common expression written across people's faces. In chinese societies, one of the most important festivals celebrated is the Lunar New Year festival. The date of this festival is in accordance with the lunar calendar (which is calculated based on the movement of the moon) thus it will change every year. During this time, the chinese believe in leaving the past behind and moving onto a new year filled with happiness and prosperity. Red is the most commonly seen color during this period for it symbolizes good luck and auspiciousness for the coming year. This is also a time for families to have reunions as they all hurry home to celebrate the coming of the new year. To brighten up the season, families sit together and make traditional foods such as dumplings or steamboat. This is a time for everyone to gather round and wish one another good luck for the new year.For the westeners, New Year is celebrated in an equally lively manner. There will countdown parties held at almost every hotel and bar. It's a time for good food and great company. People will usually party till late to kickstart the new year. This is also a time to wish each other happiness and good health for the new year. FIreworks will also be lit at the struck of midnight. It is a memorable and joyous occasion to spend with loved ones.
