Father Christmas- -圣诞老人 It is said that in the year of 300 AD, there was a kind old man and his name was Saint Nicholas. He was always ready to help the poor and often gave presents to them. Today, Father Christmas is an imaginary figure, but nearly all young children believe in him. They think he is a happy old man with a long white beard and a long red robe. On the night of the twenty-fourth of December every year, Father Christmas from some cold northern land comes down the chimney of the fireplace to put presents by the beds of children or to fill their stockings. So when children go to bed that night, they hang up their stockings, and on Christmas morning they wake to find them full of presents. Of course, it's really their parents who fill the stockings. 西欧
西欧的圣诞老人基本上都来自于尼古拉斯，但是在各国有着不一样的特色。
意大利的圣诞老人叫la befana。11世纪末来自意大利的宗教士兵将nicholas圣人的遗物带回意大利，并在港口城市bari建造了一座教堂来纪念他。很快世界各地的基督教徒纷至沓来朝圣这位圣人。这些朝圣者将圣人nicholas的故事带回他们的本土，所以有关圣诞老人的传说在各个国家都各具特色。
12世纪欧洲出现了圣人nicholas纪念日，以互赠礼物和慈善活动为主。德国、法国、荷兰则将12月6日作为宗教纪念日，给孩子和穷人们赠送礼物。
法国与圣诞老人类似的形象是père noel，他和圣诞老人几乎完全一样，其红白相间的衣服曾经使可口可乐公司获得灵感。圣诞老人原来的形象是个精灵，穿着兽皮又高又瘦。1931年可口可乐请瑞典设计师重塑圣诞老人形象。他又高又胖，永远挂着微笑，最主要的是他穿的那件棉袄永远是——可口可乐红。这就吸引了他们一直想拉拢的客户群，12岁以下的孩子。所以，您现在熟悉的圣诞老人是可口可乐打了78年的广告。

在德国中部和北部地区，尼古拉斯被称为“圣诞老人”，德国的圣诞老人也带着一个叫做knecht ruprecht、krampus或pelzebock或是称作“黑彼得”(荷文：zwarte piet)的助手，肩上背着个装着礼物的大袋子，手上拿着一根棍子。好孩子可收到他的礼物，顽皮的孩子却要给教训几棍子。

北美
荷兰殖民者来到美洲时，将他们的sintirklass主教也带了去，sintirklass身着红袈裟，骑着一匹白马。在荷兰的传说中，圣诞老人sintirklass还带了一个叫black peter的助手，乘着一艘船于12月6日来到。他带着一本大书，书中描述了所有荷兰小孩在过去一年中的表现。表现好的小孩就送礼物给他们，不好的.小孩便让他的助手带走。荷兰语的圣尼古拉(sinterklaas)传进英语成为santa claus也就相应的成为圣诞老人的人物了。

在冰岛的传说中，圣诞老人并不只一位，而是共有九位圣诞老人，各有不同的性格，有的调皮活泼，有的慈祥温柔。
斯勘的纳维亚地区的圣诞人叫julenisse 或 juletomte ;斯堪迪纳维亚的传说中讲述了圣诞老人和助手小精灵门的历史。
瑞士的圣诞老人叫christkindl或christ child。
中国的圣诞老人，他的形象与商业活动密不可分，20世纪80年代改革开放以后由可口可乐公司作为促销手段引入中国。
