牛津词典是英国牛津大学出版社出版的多种英语词典的统称，是英国语言词典的代表。牛津词典共有20卷，它的存在更具有象征意义，象征着人类对知识无限的追求。

《牛津现代英语高级学生词典》本是A.S.HORNBY等人1940年代在日本编写的专供外国学生使用的英语词典。1974年出第三版时在书名前加上“牛津”的字样，1989年出了第四版。

由于此书的定义和例证都比《简明牛津词典》更加好懂，又首创了在每个动词后加注句型的体例，名词的可数不可数也特为注明，它对外国人学习英语具有实用价值。

该书已有中文编译本；第二版的编译本是香港出版的《（牛津）现代高级英汉双解词典》，第四版的编译本是《最新现代高级英汉双解词典》（山西人民出版社，1991），第（六、七）版的编译本是《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》（商务印书馆，2004 & 2009）。

牛津简明

《简明牛津词典》原文名称叫“The Concise Oxford Dictionary”。照这本词典自己解释，Concise是brief but comprenhensive in expression的意思，即“简捷而内容丰富或全面的’的意思，事实上，任何辞典难免有“简而不明”之处。

其实只要熟练运用，许多大多数都能弄懂。除了释文简要之外，《简明牛津词典》为了尽量简省篇幅，省去了对那些不常见的词语的解释。

在The Oxford English Dictionary（20 Volume Set）基础上编写了一系列中、小型词典。

连收在词条内的派生词、复合词，总共74，000词，篇幅仅Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary（1983年9版）的一半——但六十年来对全世界英语界影响极大，普遍认为是英语词典中的权威著作。

牛津过去本是一个农村集镇，现在也不过十一二万人口。为什么叫“牛津”，已不可考。一种说法是这里正值查威尔河与泰晤士河的交汇处，水大，渡河难，恰好这里有一个很好的渡口，牛可以平安渡河，就叫做“牛津”了。
