字典在英语学习中的作用就是学习。遇到生词要查，遇到需要替换的表达要查，遇到熟词生义要查，在这样反复的查询中，词汇量就会显著增加，对英语的语感也会逐渐增强。英语学习，就是在一步一步的查询中不断升华。
字典在给出一个单词的意思时，往往会有这个词的其他词义，还会配有例句、词组搭配、同义词、反义词。一个单词，从一个孤立的点，变成思维导图似的完整网络。下次，这个查过的词就可能用到你的口语或写作中。

孩子要想会用英语字典，首先需要了解字母的排列顺序，并且要十分熟练地掌握，在这里说的熟练掌握并不只是从头至尾会流利背诵就可以了，孩子需要能比较容易地说出任何一个字母的前一个字母和后一个字母，如h的前一个字母是g后一个是i等等。
父母在教孩子使用字典时，要先认真评估一下孩子的英语能力之后，再做相应的计划。只要孩子能熟练了解字母，就能让他们开始了解字典的作用了。假如孩子已经开始学习阅读了，就能用一本简单的字典作为学习工具。假如孩子已经是个熟练的阅读者了，那对字典的使用就需要更加深入一步了。
