三坊七巷是国家5A级旅游景区，是福州老城区经历了建国后的拆迁建设后留存下来的历史街区之一。是福州的历史之源、文化之根、文脉昌盛之地。

三坊七巷自晋、唐形成起，便是贵族和士大夫的聚居地，清至民国走向辉煌。区域内现存古民居约有270座，有159处被列入保护建筑。以沈葆桢故居、林觉民故居、严复故居等9处典型建筑为代表的三坊七巷古建筑群，被国务院公布为全国重点文物保护单位。

历史文化

习惯上讲，我们都先说三坊后讲七巷，其实，从建筑位置来分析应该是先有七巷后有三坊。唐代的先民们先是沿着城市的轴线——南街，建起了一组排列工整的"新村"。

然后，再隔一条南后街，向西发展，建起一组坊巷，成为以南后街为中心轴线的"非"字形结构的街区。经过千百年的风雨变迁，大多于宋代定下坊巷之名，于明清时代形成建筑格局，成为福州历史文化名城的标志性建筑。
