犀牛栖息于开阔的草地，稀树草原，灌木林或沼泽地，其中苏门答腊犀只能在森林深处找到，一般以矮小灌木和草本植物为食物。犀牛用尿与粪堆区分领域范围。
多独居，个体之间很少接触，只有白犀牛以约10只的数目群居。多数时候都会避开人类，但在交配季节时期的雄犀牛，或带领小犀牛的雌犀牛，稍受刺激就会攻击任何目标，包括人类。
其中黑犀牛是犀牛中脾气比较坏者，会主动攻击任何陌生的气味或声音，黑犀牛跑的速度很快，即使在荆棘中也可达到45公里/小时的速度，在没有击中目标时，转身的速度也很快。
犀牛一头成年雄犀牛占有大约十平方公里的领地，它经常在领地内巡逻，以防外来者侵扰。但这些雄犀牛通常允许雌犀牛和小犀牛穿过自己的领地。
