因为 fine art 在前，“美术”是 fine art 的中文翻译在后。Fine art 的早期定义是“美学艺术”（the art of aesthetics），而中文“美术”正是这个定义的确切翻译。中文“美术”这个词是上世纪初五四运动期间从日文引入的，而日文的“美术”则是译自英语 fine art。英语 fine art 中的 fine 在英语词典中没有作为一个有针对性的意义专门解释。因此，fine art 只能作为一个独立的词条在艺术类词典里有专门的解释。早期欧洲从事艺术创作的人为强调“感觉学”，也称“美学”（aesthetics），用 fine art 区别于应用型的艺术，如装饰、器皿所用的绘画、雕塑等艺术等。故 fine art 有“纯美学艺术”之说。19世纪以后，人们逐渐用 fine art 指除建筑艺术以外的所有视觉术，而只是在学术和美术教育上进一步区别成两大类：纯美术（绘画艺术）和工艺美术（应用型艺术）。
