因为 fine art 在前,“美术”是 fine art 的中文翻译在后。Fine art 的早期定义是“美学艺术”(the art of aesthetics),而中文“美术”正是这个定义的确切翻译。中文“美术”这个词是上世纪初五四运动期间从日文引入的,而日文的“美术”则是译自英语 fine art。英语 fine art 中的 fine 在英语词典中没有作为一个有针对性的意义专门解释。因此,fine art 只能作为一个独立的词条在艺术类词典里有专门的解释。早期欧洲从事艺术创作的人为强调“感觉学”,也称“美学”(aesthetics),用 fine art 区别于应用型的艺术,如装饰、器皿所用的绘画、雕塑等艺术等。故 fine art 有“纯美学艺术”之说。19世纪以后,人们逐渐用 fine art 指除建筑艺术以外的所有视觉术,而只是在学术和美术教育上进一步区别成两大类:纯美术(绘画艺术)和工艺美术(应用型艺术)。
