作者简介：索利·麦克林 (Sorley Maclean, 1911-1996) 出生于苏格兰北部的拉阿瑟岛 (Raasay)，毕业于爱丁堡大学。他的家庭使用当地土著语言盖尔语 (Gaelic)。第二次世界大战中，他在北非服役，三次负伤。1943年他出版了第一本用盖尔语写成的诗集，对推动盖尔语在苏格兰文学创作中的复兴起到了重要的作用。晚年他居住在苏格兰西部的斯凯岛 (Isle of Skye) 上。他的诗歌全集《从林地到山脊》(From Wood to Ridge)于1989年出版。
《出卖灵魂》是一首爱情诗，但它不是一首传统意义上的爱情诗。它不描写海誓山盟，白头到老;它不描写爱人的傲慢和失恋的痛苦;它也不规劝爱人珍惜时光，及时行乐。它的题目倒使人想起了歌德的《浮士德》(Faust)。浮士德博士把灵魂卖给了魔鬼，以换取24年的人生享受，包括爱情的满足和无穷无尽的知识与财富。
