在中国，最早在台上表演的戏曲演员们，都要有一个标定走台流程的表演小剧本，哪怕当时很多人还不识字，只要口口相传，这个在表演中所依据的底本就叫“脚本”。它的功能是标定演员表演时每一步站的位置以及唱的台词，整台大戏是这么一步步地累积而成的，原来就是靠不识字的演员一脚一脚淌出来的，没有先写剧本再演出的过程，叫“脚本”是很形象的事情。后来的电影艺术也借鉴了这个词汇，来称呼剧本的原稿。西方人有了戏剧脚本的历史并不长，当时多是手写一些小剧本来描绘演出执行步骤，所以西方文字中的script,或者scenario就是“描述情节的手稿”的意思，对应成我们的“脚本”。计算机程序的“脚本”语言，是一种描述性的程序语言，需要经过翻译才能成为可执行的机器语言，比较类似于西方戏剧中的“描述手稿”，所以西方人先套用了Script这个词来称呼这种语言。翻译成中文时也就对应成了“脚本”。其实，说起来也算是贴切。但跟音译无关。
