Seoul is one of oldest cities in Korea. Its history can be traced to the year 18 BC. The Goryeo Dynasty built a palace in Seoul, which was called "the Southern Capital". Later dynasties, including the Joseon Dynasty, also made Seoul their capital. It was still the capital during the colonization by Japan from 1910 until 1945. Seoul hosted the Olympic Games in the summer of 1988.
