Peking的由来
Peking是在中国大陆汉语拼音方案施行之前,汉字的拉丁文转写使用威妥玛式拼音和邮政式拼音。邮政式拼音是一个以拉丁字母拼写中国地名的系统,始于晚清。
1906年春季于上海举行的帝国邮电联席会议通过了这个方案并将其作为拼写中国地名的标准,1912年中华民国成立之后继续使用邮政式拼音,因此它是20世纪上半叶西方国家拼写中国地名时最常用的拼写方案,直到中华人民共和国成立之后,在大陆地区邮政式拼音逐渐被汉语拼音取代。
按照邮政式拼音的拼写规则,北京拼写为“Peking”。北京大学根据邮政式拼音法起了英文名“PekingUniversity”,并一直沿用至今。
