小鸡就是鸡的幼崽，从鸡蛋中孵化。小鸡吃饲料及青菜、小虫、碎米成长。鸡是人类饲养最普遍的家禽。家鸡源出 [1] 于野生的原鸡，其驯化历史至少约4000年，但直到1800年前后鸡肉和鸡蛋才成为大量生产的商品，属于动物界，脊索动物门，脊椎动物亚门，鸟纲，突胸总目，鸡形目，雉科，原鸡属，家鸡种。初出壳雏鸡个体小、娇嫩、绒毛短，保温能力低，调节体温机能也还不完善，直到3～4周龄，才逐渐完备。因此，搞好防寒保温，调节适宜的温、湿度，是养好小鸡，提高雏鸡成活率的关键。雏鸡适宜的温度为：30～32℃。以后，每5天降温1～2℃，一个月龄后，如外界气温在20℃以上时，可以自然给温，否则应继续保温。温度适宜与否，可观察雏鸡的形态表现：如雏鸡挤成一堆，不爱活动与吃食，不时发出“吱、吱”叫声，音长而无力，是温度过低的表现；如果雏鸡两翼下垂，张口喘气，拍翅抢水喝，不时发出“啾、啾”声音，叫声尖而短，则是温度过高，只有雏鸡分布均匀，活动、吃食正常，羽毛平整光亮，排除粪后粪便多呈现条状，睡眠时头颈伸直，安静等说明温度合适
调节雏鸡温度的方法有很多，小群鸡可放于纸箱或木箱，箱内铺垫干草或棉絮，垫料下还可放置热水袋，或用电灯照明取暖。大群鸡可采取温室保育。
另外，育雏舍（室或箱）内若太干燥，鸡体内水分散发量大，不利于雏鸡的生长；若湿度太大，空气不流通，雏鸡容易感染病。适时的相对湿度为55～65%。调节的方法，只要饮水器内不断水即能达到要求；霉雨季节湿度偏大时，可加厚干燥的垫料并及时清理潮湿垫料即可。 [3]
及时供水开食、搞好日粮搭配
雏鸡开食之前，先给饮用0.01～0.02%的高锰酸钾水溶液（呈浅红色即可），以清除胎粪和消毒肠胃。然后喂给8%的蔗糖水，可提高雏鸡成活率。最后再喂料。然后，要经常供给饮水，以免因缺水，而一下子暴饮拉稀死亡。饮水宜先用温开水，以后可逐渐改用新鲜清洁凉水，同时防止雏鸡弄湿羽毛。
幼雏阶段喂料不宜受餐数限制，应任其自由采食，以后逐渐减少饲喂次数，到20日龄后日喂4次即可。喂料不宜过湿，以能松散为
