楼上的解释比较明确.再补充下自己的理解. 'what seems to be'可以从句子中去掉而不影响句子的“完整”.句子变成After a hundred years, ... ...句子原义变化了,但是主干after + a period of time e.g. after two hours没缺.总之它是一个自成一体的修饰成分,自身因为有SEEM又带有“好似”的意思. 来个没有after的例句： The policeman is reading (what seems to be) a letter from his daughter. 加不加这个what seems to be,只是意思上多一个或少一个好似、仿佛的含义.语法上有它没它句子都是完整而正确的.了解?：） 很抱歉不知道具体语言学中是什么成分,那会儿英语老师一解释到具体什么某某补足语,是干脆不听的...不过用起来很顺,一看到那个挖空就知道是what.
