eat one's words 其实本身是没有”食言“这个意思的，后来被误译为”食言“，现在很多人也会这么用但是它本身的意思是“收回前面所说的话“，”为自己说过的话道歉“ eat one's words 是一个争议良久的短语，很多人包括网络词典都将其认作“食言”的意思，但据考证牛津、柯林斯和韦氏等权威词典，其释义则归纳为：Admit that what you said was wrong，收回前言，承认错误（《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》第七版）；If you said that someone has to eat their words, you mean that they have to admit that they were wrong about something they said in the past, especially when this makes them look foolish，收回前言，承认说错了话；to retract what one has said（Merrian Webster）。
