The Goodness of lifeThough there is much to be concerned about, there is far, far more for which to be thankful. Though life’s goodness can at times be overshadowed, it is never outweighed. For every single act that is senselessly destructive, there are thousands more small, quite acts of love, kindness and compassion. For every person who seeks to hurt, there are many, many more who devote their lives to helping and to healing. There is a goodness to life that cannot be denied. In the most magnificent vistas and in the smallest details, look closely, for that goodness always comes shining through. There is no limit to the goodness of life. It grows more abundant with each new encounter. The more you experience and appreciate the goodness of life, the more there is to be lived.Even when the cold winds blow and the world seems to be covered in foggy shadows, the goodness of life lives on. Open your eyes open your heart, and you will see that goodness is everywhere.Though the goodness of life seems at times to suffer setbacks, it always endures. For in the darkest moments it becomes vividly clear that life is a priceless treasure. And so the goodness of life is made even stronger by the very things that would oppose it.Time and time again when you feared it was gone forever you found that the goodness of life was really only a moment away. Around the next corner, inside every moment, the goodness of life is there to surprise and delight you.Take a moment to let the goodness of life touch your spirit and calm your thoughts. Then, share your good fortune with another. For the goodness of life grows more and more magnificent each time it is given away.Though the problems constantly scream for attention and the conflicts appear to rage ever stronger, the goodness of life grows stronger still, quietly, peacefully, with more purpose and meaning than ever before.

A Dystopian Society A Dystopian Society is an imagined universe where the worst-case scenario takes place, the term usually reflects to the future. In both the short story “Harris Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut and the film “the Matrix”, they introduced a dystopian society. In this society, there is too much egalatarism, and as a result differences are no longer accepted; there is no competitions and people lacks in emotions. Though both worlds seem to be a utopia society, but in reality they are far from being perfect. The people are blinded from the truth and would simply accept whatever others tell them to believe.Egalatarism is the key word of the creation of the societies in “Harris Bergeron” and “the Matrix” .Egalatarism is a common term that had been seen in history, it is usually the primary idea of a revolution. People fought and died to have equality among every human being, but in the society from “Harris Bergeron”, they have reached perfect egalatarism already, and it is still not the ideal utopia world. Being equal is the idea behind a utopia society, but not everything of a utopia world. When people start to be equal in every way, both mentally and physically, the problem of over-doing egalatarism will rise. They are almost all identical as if the whole society is made of clones. Here’s a quote from the short story: “…everybody was finally equal. They weren’t only equal before God and the law. They were equal every which way. Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else.” That is when differences are no longer accepted. In “Harris Bergeron”, people are being punished for being smarter or stronger than an average person, and are handi-capped to make them live just like any other average person. They are being pushed back from developing to their true potential. With everybody being alike and knowing being superior is not a good thing, there will be no competition.Harris’s society lacks in competitions. Human beings learn and improve from competitions. Harris’s father is a rather intelligent person, and is handi-capped to make him less bright. He does not look forward to change, he is afraid of changes and unequally. He does not want any competitions because he thinks of it as a bad thing, it will not make things any better, and only return everything back to the imperfect world they lived in. he is blinded from the truth. People learn through competitions, they see each other’s weaknesses and strong skills, then improve and look forward to being better. Change can only happen through competitions or arguments, it is then the person will realize what is really out there and how another person’s point view sees world. A person cannot just sit there and think of what should be better with nothing to compare to. A perfect society cannot exist when the society do not evolve and have any change. Human beings also develop a strong emotion through competitions, to feel ambitious, satisfy and determined. In both “Harris Bergeron” and “the Matrix”, the emotion of the human beings is illustrated. Emotion is the key to one’s life. Emotion is everywhere, everyone with feelings have emotions, but what about those who refuses to feel? In “Harris Bergeron”, Harris get shot, and his parents sees the whole process with a TV, and yet feels nothing. His parents are sad for a few seconds, and then they are brain-washed and forget everything; they could not even remember why they are sad. Their lack of emotions is what created the dystopian society they lived in. In “the Matrix”, Agent Smith, one of the three computers who takes on human form and infiltrates the metric, is not happy. He is tired from the society and yet he could not show any emotions because he is not supposed to feel anything as to who he is. This lack of emotion created the dystopian society they lived in. Emotions of the human being are very important, Neo from “the Matrix” almost died, but Trinity’s love feeling for him made him come back to life. Neo became the One, and saves the world. All the examples from “Harris Bergeron” and “the Matrix” shows the ideal utopian society people came up with, but instead, all failed miserably and created the opposite effect. Most people think a dystopian world will only occur in the future: in the text “Harris Bergeron” the year is 2081, in the movie “the Matrix’ the year is close to the year 2199. Chaos usually happens when the people starts to rebel and wanting differences, to create a utopian society, a perfect society where everyone is equal and happy, which cannot actually exist in the real world, people can try to achieve the utopia society, but they usually gets on the wrong track in the process, and creates a Dystopian society instead. People need emotions to feel and be alive, to have competitions to improve from their own or others mistakes and accept each other’s differences. So what is a utopian society or what does it look like? Just like the quote from “the Matrix”, Morpheus said: “Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself.”
