In my opinion，it includs two aspects.First of all，it reflets that Chinese people’s attitude towards foreign countries has changed.We become more open，and we are more willing to accept something different.It aslo reflets that western culture has more effects on us than ever before. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------It reflects that people especially young men love holidays. The more， the better. And the western culture is very interesting. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Everything has two points.This phenomenon reflects both good side and bad side.Maybe our traditional holidays are more "pale" than those western holidays，and more and more people don’t like to celebrate them.For a instance，nowadays Spring Festival is quite different from our parents’ gerenation. And say some good points of it.First，obviously it can bring big income of economy to our country，it can make some people become richer，like business men.Second，our lives will become more "full"，we get more chances to gahter with our parents and friends. It is also the influence of the intercultural communication.Festival CelebrationIn contrast to the enthusiasm for foreign festivals, some Chinese youths pay less and less attention to some traditional Chinese ones. What’s your opinion about this phenomenon?A: I think this phenomenon has something to do with the open-door policy and the popularity of English language in our country. Since the beginning of the 90s, English seems to play a more and more important role in our society. With a good knowledge of English, you can easily find a job with a fairly high salary. And it’s a passport to most people, esp. youths who are willing to go abroad to pursue further studies. Without English, you can’t even use the computer, the most widely used apparatus in modern society, and still less to travel on the Internet. Most advanced technology is introduced into the country originally in English. What’s more, presently America is the most powerful country in the world. Shouldn’t we first learn as much about it as possible before we could overtake it in economy?For this reason, we learn its language, its technology, and its culture. In some people’s eyes, esp. the youths’, almost everything western seems to be fancy and is worthy of learning, owing to the higher living standards in western countries.Another reason may be that, owing to the open-door policy, Chinese and westerners have more chances to communicate with each other and therefore more understanding to each other’s culture. I have a very good friend, and her sister is now married to a German. She told me that her sister spent too much time with foreigners and on foreign culture. Now she even finds it difficult to communicate with Chinese. Actually, the westerners are comparatively getting more interested in Chinese culture and Chinese festivals, esp. the Spring Festival. Personally to say, I don’t see any necessity to worry about it. As long ass we can develop our own economy more quickly, more foreigners will come and learn from us. Our own culture can be more widespread. And I have the confidence it will come true sooner or later.B: In my opinion, not only it’s not a bad phenomenon, but the thing is actually quite positive. For myself, I like these western festivals. Just now A talked so much about learning the language and culture. No doubt it is reasonable. But I join the growing numbers who celebrate these holidays, not only because it’s foreign. I think these holidays just express more concern, more caring, about individual feelings than do their Chinese counterparts. For example, for Christmas, we prepare and send gifts to friends, and always give each other a surprise. On Valentine’s Day, not only young people, but people of various ages send roses, chocolates to the person he or she loves. It’s really romantic. On April Fool, we can play all kinds of jokes on others, of course to the limit we don’t hurt their feeling, and have a big laugh. Isn’t it an enjoyable thing?What’s more, usually we hold parties on the festivals. It’s a chance for the friends to join together and fully enjoy themselves after a period of hard and strenuous work. Usually, it helps to give out the pressure we have had at least for the time being and to express our feeling freely. So I think western festivals are especially suitable to the young people.For traditional Chinese festivals, there seems to be few active activities we could organize by ourselves. For instance, on the Dragon Boat festival, though sometimes we have a dragon boat race, on the whole it’s too much troublesome while a Christmas party is easier for us. Besides, Chinese people are more reserved. So in Spring Festival, though it’s the only chance in a year for most families to have a family reunion, most often they just enjoy a dinner, have a chat, and do nothing but watch TV, For the elder people, maybe they are quite content with this. But for me, for the young people, I say it’s good, but just not enough.C: Compared with B, I’m a more traditional person. I’ve also noticed the change and my attitude toward this phenomenon is just “live-and-let-live”. People can have their own way of life. If they want to celebrate the western festivals, then just let them do it. But for myself, I prefer celebrating our traditional ones. Consider the Pure Bright festival. Young people, esp. those in large cities, with the high pace of modern life, they don’t have enough time, or patience, to remember the past. But for the old ones, and people in suburban or country areas, it’s still very important. People just go to the graves, bringing some flowers or some other things the person underground had liked in his or her lifetime. The way is simple. However, it’s a chance for the living person to memorize the past days and people, and to pay some tribute to the ancestors and some relative or ex-friends. I think it’s a typical Chinese way of showing our love. Also, the Double Ninth Festival. It is the day to remember the family members who are far away. People climb high, and seem to be looking for those relatives.As B mentioned just now, Chinese people are more reserved. And being reserved is not a fault in our character. We just show our love in our own way. It may not be spoken out, but one can feel it. And usually it’s the deepest, and the strongest love. Under the more reserved appearance, there is often a more colorful and richer inner world.So, though I don’t object to the celebration of the western festivals, it’s still more important to celebrate our own. We are the offspring of the great Dragon. If we give up our own traditions easily, then can I say that to a certain degree we have given ourselves up?D: I’d like to add something. Just now A said that people celebrate the western festivals because they want to learn their culture. I should say, for some, it is true. But not always the case for every person. As I see it, some young people just think lightly of our own culture. They are looking for some change, and to make the situation worse, they change themselves somewhat blindly. They hold the view that foreign countries are more developed than us and we should learn from them .For the time being, it’s true, but what we should learn is science and more advanced technology, and also, a better understanding of their culture, instead of just paying attention to their life style. So the change they are pursuing is only a superficial one.In my view, there might be a factor you’ve missed just now. That’s the advertising of the businessmen. Their motive has nothing to do with culture, though in a way they have contributed a little. They are the quickest to respond to the fashion of the day. A few days, or even a few weeks before the festival, esp. the Christmas, we can see the advertisements and decorations at the gate of restaurants, hotels, supermarkets and even little stores. In this way they have created the atmosphere of celebrating these western festivals. From their advertisements, it seems that everyone should join the celebration or he or she will be out-fashioned. This is an important encouragement or allurement for the people to accept such new concept; while to those business men, more festivals mean more shopping more presents, and therefore, more money.B: It’s true we spend more money. But we just do it willingly. I think it’s worth the while because it’s a chance, and a way to communicate, and to show your feeling to the people you love. I don’t agree that the celebration is nothing but superficial. Still, there are shining points as I talked about just now. Anyway, I admit that we really should have a deeper understanding of their culture.C: Can I break in for a minute? As I see it, at the present moment, we have two urgent tasks at hand. One is to develop our economy quickly, it can help us win back the youth; the other is to publicize and give more attention to our own way accepting it. One of my friends spent the Valentine’s night reviewing all the photographs he and his wife they had taken together. There was no rose, nor chocolate, and no candlelit dinner in a luxurious restaurant. But still, to them, it’s the best way to remember and to express love.
