A Letter For Help
一封求助信
Dear Ralph,
I’m a middle school student. My name is Li Hua. I once had a very happy family, but now everything has changed because of my father. He used to be a very good doctor and was often praised by his patients. He took good care of the family and did housework every day. However, he is now quite a different person. He plays majiang all night and often quarrels with my mother. I just cannot concentrate on my studies and my grades are coming down. I’m very much worried and I’m afraid it will destroy my family as well as my father.
Could you help me and tell me what to do? I’m looking forward to your reply. Thank you very much.
Yours,
Li Hua

Dear Alice,
How nice to hear from you. You want to know what is going on in schools in China? Now, I will tell you about it.
In the past, exam-oriented education forced us to listen to our teachers while taking notes in class. We did all kinds of exercises without end, though it was 5 o’clock in the afternoon. After supper, we had to continue our exercises far into the night.
Now, quality-oriented education has made our school life colorful. We are active in class. In order to train the ability, we often do research on study. Sometimes one of us teaches ourselves. We have various outside activities, such as singing, dancing, English corner, and taking computer lessons. Basketball and football are our favorite sports. In the evening we can watch news on TV, do experiments by ourselves and have talks and discussions of our subjects.
Please make sure that our school life is getting more and more colorful and interesting.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Ms. Tancredi:
Last week, my family and I dined at your restaurant while travlling in Singapore. We are alwayslooking to try another new restaurant. We liked the way your place looked, so we went inside tohave dinner.
The place was crowded and the waiters seemed very busy. After a long wait, we were finallyseated. Soon, we ordered the food. We waited an even longer time for the food to arrive.Frustrated, I got the attention of a waiter passing by. I asked what was going on with ourmeals. He went and checked with the chef. It turned out our waiter had forgotten to place yourorder. Rightfully angry, we left the restaurant.
Forgetting a customer's order is a big problem. If that type of thing continues, you are going tolose your customers. Here's a suggestion. Require the waiters to actually write down theorders. In such a busy place, it would be impossible to remember them all.
Sincerely,
Shiwen Cai
当然,如果在熟人之间进行书信交流,或者文章篇幅受限较大的情况下,也可以直入主题,在信的开头直接写“I am writing to tell you that...(我写这封信是想告诉你...)”,“This letter is based on your request that...(基于你对...的请求,我给你写了这封信)”等等。
3. 书信有时候是很严肃的,有时候也可能是非常随意的,所以英语书信作为一个使用文体来说格式和风格并不一定是特别的严谨和一成不变,希望学习者能够根据具体情况作出相应的调整。

Dear Mercy,
How is everything going! Last time you said you are anxious now because you find it hard to learn English well. Don’t worry. I think you have to improve your English step by step. And I will right behind you. In my view, you should develop you interest on English first. According to my experience, I think watching English movie, listen to some wonderful English songs and talk in English on the Internet would be helpful. Secondly, you have to prepare lessons before class that will help you understand what the teacher says in the class. I know you feel bored in the class, but you have force yourself to be concentrated. A few days later you will feel it a little easy to learn English. The left steps I will tell next time. By the way, we have not seen each other since your family move to Hunan a year ago. Have you ever thought about going back to visit me and learn English together in the coming Summer vacation. Looking forward to your reply.
Best wishes,

I look forward to signing the contract when we meet next week.
Yours faithfully

Dear Tom,
How are you doing? You asked me in your last letter about my plan for the coming summer vacation. I am sorry that I didn’t reply without delay. How I wish I would read and reply your email as soon as I received it. However, I was busy preparing for my final exam at that time, which is vital for me. As a result, I had no choice but to completely focus on my study, for which I am very sorry. I hope you can understand me.
During the holiday, I am going to do a part-time job. On the one hand, I can earn some money to reduce the burden of my family. On the other hand, I accumulate the social experience, which does good to my future life. At the same time, I will not forget to go over my lesson. I will sp end a instructive holiday. How will you sp end your holiday? I hope you have a good time.
These are my plan for the summer vacation. What’s yours? I am looking forward to your earliest reply.
