我国最早的一部解释词义的专著《尔雅·释诂》说：“朕，身也。”在先秦时代，“朕”是第一人称代词。不分尊卑贵贱，人人都可以自称“朕”。据司马迁《史记·秦始皇本纪》记载：秦嬴政统一天下后，规定：“天子自称曰朕。”从此，一般人不能自称“朕”了。 《现代汉语词典》解释“朕”，说：“秦以前指‘我的’或‘我’，自秦始皇起专用做皇帝自称。”但是，这里要做二点说明： 第一，“朕”作为第一人称代词，在先秦时代并不等于后世的“余”、“吾”、“我”之类的第一人称代词。正像顾颉刚、刘起纡两位先生在《<尚书·汤誓>校释译论》指出的那样：“朕——甲骨金文中都只作单数第一人称领格（所有格），即‘我的’。”如：《书·舜典》：“汝作朕虞。”意思是：“你作我的掌管山泽的官员。”《大盂鼎》（金文）：“勿废朕令”。意思是：“不要抛弃我的训令。”《离骚》：“朕皇考曰伯庸。”意思是：“我的父亲叫伯庸。“ 或许有人说，《尚书·汤誓》中有“朕不食言”。意思是：“我不会说话不算数”。许慎《说文·舟部》释“朕”：“我也”。这些不都证明，在先秦朝代，“朕”也可以等同后世的“余”、“吾”、“我”吗？我们认为，今本《尚书·汤誓》已非原汁，难免被后人搀假。秦火以后，仅凭西汉儒家学者伏生口授，打上汉代烙印是十分可能的。许慎是东汉人，他对先秦词义的理解就更难确切了。 第二，“朕”字，自秦始皇开始为皇帝的专用词，这是普通的情况，但有特例，那就是至尊若皇太后也可以自称“朕”。例如《后汉书·和殇帝纪》：“皇太后诏曰：‘今皇帝以幼年，茕茕在疚，朕且佐助听政。”
