西藏的英文为“Tibet”，英式读音为['taɪbet]，美式读音为[tɪ'bet]。汉语“西藏”一词最早出现于清朝康熙二年(1663)的《清实录》里。而关于它英文名称的记载比中文名称早得多的多。早在13世纪Tebet就曾作为一个民族的名字出现过。
在民族称谓上，Tibet 对应“藏族”；但在地域称谓上，Tibet 有时对应“西藏”，有时又泛指整个藏族地区，与“西藏”的含义有比较大的差别。
“西藏”概况：
“西藏”一词最早见于清康熙二年(1663年)。1951年5月和平解放。1956年将昌都地区并入，并成立自治区筹备委员会。1965年9月9日建立自治区。
首府拉萨，主要城市还有日喀则、江孜、昌都、林芝、亚东等。有“世界屋脊”之称，为青藏高原主体。珠穆朗玛峰(海拔为8848.13米)在区内南部中国、尼泊尔边境上。
全区面积120多万平方公里，约为江苏、浙江这些省面积的11倍左右，是仅次于新疆维吾尔自治区面积的一个省区。
