鳞茎膨大需较高的温度，鳞茎在15℃以下不能膨大，21～27℃生长最好。温度过高就会生长衰退，进入休眠。
洋葱属长日照作物，在鳞茎膨大期和抽薹开花期需要14小时以上的长日照条件。在高温短日照条件下只长叶，不能形成葱头。洋葱适宜的光照强度为2万～4万勒克斯。
