创作背景
1936年，红军组织东征部队，准备东渡黄河对日军作战。红军从子长县出发，挺进到清涧县高杰村的袁家沟一带时，部队在这里休整了16天。
2月5日至20日，毛泽东在这里居住期间，曾下过一场大雪，长城内外白雪皑皑，隆起的秦晋高原，冰封雪盖。天气严寒，连平日奔腾咆哮的黄河都结了一层厚厚的冰，失去了往日的波涛。毛泽东当时住在农民白治民家中，深夜。见此情景，颇有感触，填写了这首词。
《沁园春·雪》最早发表于1945年11月14日重庆《新民报晚刊》，后正式发表于《诗刊》1957年1月号。
