引言:翻译是需要雕琢的,直译是初级水平,意译是中级水平,最高级的翻译,应该让读译文的人和读原文的人有同样的感受,这才是好的翻译。挪威森林译者注1987年,当《挪威的森林》出版时,作者村上春树所拥有的读者数量从通常的6位数一下子飙升至几百万——对此,村上本人感到既震惊又有些沮丧。出名是一回事,成为超级巨星可是另一回事了,而且当时那股热潮使他不得不回到欧洲避世隐居(他是在希腊和意大利创作的这本小说)。(Kevin注:the craziness of it sent him back to the anonymity of Europe是一句非常难理解也有挑战性的话,我个人认为是书太热门,村上只能逃回欧洲以求清静,而括号里的“他在希腊和意大利写的这本小说”是为了解释句子里的back这个词。)1991年,他搬到了美国。直到1995年,村上才作好了回国定居的准备,但是他坚守自己的原则,没有像一般日本畅销书作家那样在电视上频频亮相或搞个人崇拜。(Kevin注:pontification基本上是权威化的意思,略带贬义,所以我用了“搞个人崇拜”这样的说法。)尽管《挪威的森林》是村上写过的最“家喻户晓”的一本书,但伴随那些年轻一代的读者成长的,却是另一些作品,例如描写日本黑暗历史的《发条鸟编年史》(Kevin注:据说这本书也叫《奇鸟行状记》),1995年写的阪神大地震以及描写东京地铁沙林毒气袭击事件的《地下铁》。村上的早期读者大都习惯了他在《寻羊冒险记》与《象的失踪》里那种冷静、细碎、带有美国口味的叙述手法,当他们读到《挪威的森林》时,反而觉得有些失望,因为这部作品看起来“仅仅是”一个爱情故事——并且与日本主流的自传式小说有疑似之处,而村上本人自从1979年崭露头角开始,一直是拒绝这种主流风格的创作的。对此,村上自己是这样说的:“许多读者认为《挪威的森林》是种退化,是对我之前作品风格的一种背叛。然而对我本人而言,情况恰恰相反:这本书是一种探险,一个挑战。我从没有写过那类直白简单的故事,我想考验一下自己。我把故事设置在60年代晚期,借用了主人公所在大学的环境,结合了我自己学生时代的日常经历。由于这个原因,许多人认为这本书是自传型的,实际上完全不是如此。我自己的青年时代其实非常平淡乏味,远没有主人公那样充满戏剧性。假使我仅仅如实描述我自己的生活,这部小说最多15页。”(未完待续——太长了,分段译) 作者对自传性的问题付之一笑,但作品本身的确有自传的感觉,其中包含了亲身经历、思想碰撞、对超自然的体验,而且客观上,对于年轻的村上刚从神户来到东京时的那段生活,这本小说写得比其他任何作品都要直接。在书中大部分叙述的1968至1970年,村的最主要的经历是在学生运动的浪潮中(Kevin注:译成“激流”也不错)认识了他的一生挚爱——妻子阳子。当然,作者说得也没错:小说里也有许多虚构成分,大量的讽刺与夸张,还有幽默,以及村上的忠实读者一眼就能认出来的象征手法。这本书绝对不“仅仅是”一个爱情故事。在国外,忠实的村上书迷也许可以找到Alfred Birnbaum早期翻译的《挪威的森林》,该书在日本出版,后面有语法注解,可以让学生们在学习英语的同时阅读到他们最喜欢的作者的作品。尽管该书后来还被翻译成法语、意大利语、汉语、韩语、挪威语、希伯莱语,但现在这个版本是第一个由村上授权在日本境外出版的英语译本。终于好了……
