提起土豆，大家都知道它的英文是“potato”，那么“hot potato”是不是“热的土豆”呢？是不是就是咱们把蒸熟，做土豆泥的土豆呢？你要是这么想可就是望文生义了哦。“hot potato”在英语中通常指一些棘手的、难以处理的问题，即a problem or a situation,etc. that is difficult to deal with. 也跟我们中文里的成语“烫手山芋”的意思有异曲同工之妙。说到另一个跟potato有关的习语，便是“couch potato”。couch是“沙发”，但“couch potato”可不是“沙发土豆”哦！ 此习语是专指那些终日懒散在家，整日沉溺于电视的人。他们整天坐在沙发上，吃着薯条，眼睛一眨不眨地盯着电视屏幕，于是couch potato成了“电视迷”的代名词。 拓展：英语中还有很多有趣的习语，跟我们汉语中的成语相映成趣。 例如： 茶（tea）英国人对茶情有独钟，无论什么饮品都代替不了茶在他们心中的位置。因此，somebody's cup of tea指的是to be something thatone prefers or desires, 对某人胃口的东西，使某人感兴趣的东西。也是我们口语里常说的“……是某人的菜”。 如“我对古典音乐不感兴趣”他们会说Classical music is not my cup of tea. 苹果（apple）英语中，瞳孔常用pupil来表达，不过，“the apple of the eye”也可表达此意，如《圣经》中，“keep me as the apple of the eye”（求你保佑我，如同保佑眼中的瞳孔）正因为这一典故，大约十九世纪，短语“the apple of one's eye”（掌上明珠）开始被人们广泛使用。 之所以会用apple（苹果）来指代“瞳孔”，从另一方面来看，则反映了人类过去在解剖学上无知——瞳孔（虹膜中间的小圆孔）被误认为是“实心的球体”，也许苹果是我们日常中最经常见到的球体，所以，这个微小的“实心球体”被称为“眼中的苹果”。不过，误打误撞倒撞得也值，否则，我们就难有这么奇异有趣的比喻，“眼中的苹果”——掌上明珠： Lucy is the apple of her grandmother's eye.露西是她奶奶的掌上明珠。 盐（salt）习语eat somebody's salt，意为“接受某人的款待”，来自阿拉伯语。在阿拉伯人眼里，盐是很宝贵的东西。吃了某人的盐，就意味着主人和客人之间产生了神圣的契约。一个人只要吃了别人的盐，就不应该再说那个人的坏话或恩将仇报。这是不是像极了中国的那句话“吃人嘴软，拿人手短”啊？ 面包和黄油（bread and butter）有人说西方的文化实际上就是面包文化，因为面包bread和黄油butter是西方最常见的食物，所以英文中以“bread and butter”表示“生计”。例如Acting is my bread and butter.演戏就是我的饭碗。 现在经常看到的各种文中鼓励女性经济要独立，乃至于有些女性喊出的“面包我自己挣，给我爱情就好。”也是这个意思。 文 | 画姐阅读 首发于 | 中英文摘阅读
