pity通常是对某件憾事表示同情，而regret则表示后悔作了某事或者对即将要做的事情表示遗憾。

词语用法
pity可作“可惜的事，令人遗憾的事”解，为可数名词，但往往只用于单数形式，前面常加不定冠词a，常用于“It is/was a pity...”结构，其后可接动词不定式，也可接that从句。在口语中that可以省略，that从句中有时可用虚拟语气。有时还可以把it is省去，直接用pity作为句子的开头。
pity也常用于“What a pity”结构中，其后可接动词不定式或that从句。
