②本句中的the two是指：这两个人。【注】这里two的用法相当于“代词”，代指“两个人或两个事物等”。

③at the time：在过去某个特定的时候=then

④remain：继续某种状态。这时remain是个“系动词”，后面应接“主语补足语”，俗称“表语”。

⑤为了避免重复，remained so(保持着这样的关系)中的so代指前文中的friendly。【注】so(如此;如是)常用来指代：前文提到过的想法、行动、品质、情况等内容。
