在西欧，大公本来是一种封建诸侯等级，其地位略高于公爵。其后随著诸侯国独立，大公遂演变为独立君主的称号。以大公或者女大公为国家元首的国家，就是大公国。现今仅存的自称为大公国只剩下卢森堡大公国，但实际上在翻译上任何以君主为元首的城邦或微型国家，在中文或日文都可以称为大公国或公国。

一个旧称一个新的

the Netherlands是历史上的尼德兰,中世纪末期，作为一个地区概念，它并不仅指今荷兰，还包括今比利时、卢森堡一带。《世界历史词典》称：“尼德兰（Nederland）①即荷兰。②西欧的历史地区，位于北海之滨，莱茵河、马斯河与埃斯考河（Escaut，英文作Schelde〔些尔德河〕）下游，包括今荷兰、比利时、卢森堡和法国东北部的一部分。‘尼德兰’意为低地，因这一带地势低平而得名。曾为查理帝国的一部分。据公元843年《凡尔登条约》，大部分划归中王国。后形成一些封建领地，如不拉奔（Brabant）、佛兰德斯（Flanders）、荷兰（Holland）。十四世纪时为勃良第公爵兼并。1477年归哈布斯堡王朝统治。1556年转属西班牙。” 荷兰的正式称谓是尼德兰(Netherland,意为低地,在1830年比利时独立之前,尼德兰通常兼指荷兰和比利时),我们中国人习惯以荷兰省(尼德兰最大的一个省)来指代整个尼德兰。

英文中有关荷兰的三个词the Netherlands, Holland, Dutch 有 何区别？ The Netherlands指荷兰，就象China指中国一样。 Holland也指荷兰，这是因为以前以北荷兰省和南荷兰省为主体的两个省构成了荷兰，这两个省在全世界以从事贸易闻名，久而久之，人们便以Holland代指荷兰，但现在这两个省只是荷兰西部国土的一部分。 Dutch是指荷兰人，就象Chinese指中国人一样。Dutch也指荷兰语。

奥地利一个出身低微的家族，叫作哈布斯堡家，在当皇帝时，为了提高它的威望，给自己伪造了一个极为高贵的家族源流，自称大公，以示地位高于其他公爵。之后，大公这一称谓逐渐流传开来，所以奥地利称作为大公国。
