The first is a form of courtesy, the second may lead to embarrassment. To snarl at play has something of the beast and seems to have more. Audacious raillery is delightful: to stand it proves power. To show oneself annoyed causes the other to be annoyed. Best leave it alone; the surest way not to put on the cap that might fit. duanwenw.com The most serious matters have arisen out of jests. Nothing requires more tact and attention. Before you begin to joke know how far the subject of your joke is able to bear it.
You talk when you stop being at peace with your thoughts. When you can no longer dwell in the solitude of your heart, you will talk, and the sound becomes a pastime. And in much of your talking, thinking is half murdered. Thought is like a bird, and once in a cage of words it can unfold its wings, but not fly.
There are people who talk ceaselessly for fear of being alone. And there are those who talk, and unknowingly show a truth about themselves which they themselves do not understand. duanwenw.com And there are those who have the truth within them, and know it, and for that very reason don’t try to put it into words.
When you meet a friend on the road or in a market, let your spirit move your lips and direct your tongue. Let the voice within your mind speak to the ear of him. His soul will keep the truth of your heart, just as the taste of the wine is remembered when its colour is forgotten.
I think each of us has a place that stands out in our memory. I have such a place that often made me happy many years ago. But sometimes I ask myself if this place would be as beautiful as I remember if I were to go back. Perhaps I’ve made it beautiful in my mind.
This place is meaningful to me because it is part of the county I loved and grew up in, duanwenw.com and part of my childhood. It is in a town named Pikeville.
Pikeville has been polluted by the coal industry, but has this clean place on a hill. The hill has seven old trees, and in summer is covered with wild flowers. I used to go there to sit on a rock, with the colorful flowers all around me.
I liked to go there to lie down on the grass, listen to the wind, kiss the flowers and watch the leaves moving. duanwenw.com The wind seemed part of my breath, the leaves part of my song, and the flowers part of my purity, while the trees were my friends. I used to hug them every time I went there.
The place meant so much to me because it was clean and quiet in a world of noise and dirt. I hope it is still the beautiful place that I remember.

One day a man walking on the road met a celestial, who happened to be an old friend of his.

And he gave it to the man.
But the man was not satisfied. The celestial pointed again with his finger at a large stone lion atthe gate, which at once turned into a gold lion.
And he gave it to him too. But the man still complained it was not enough.
The celestial asked him:
“My friend, how much will be enough for you? What should I do to satisfy you?”
The man hummed and hawed and said:“I want your finger.”
In a village in the mountain in front, there was a man named Wang Laowu notorious for hislaziness.
Everyone called him “Lazy Laowu”, but he never admitted he was lazy. Wheneversomeonecalled him “Lazy Laowu”, he would glare and say:
“Who is lazy? It is just that I don't want to make my efforts in vain.”
One day he went out. Before he had taken several steps, he stumbled and fell down.
He got up and walked for a few more steps, then fell down again.
This time he lay on the ground and would not get up. He said to himself:
“If I knew this earlier, why did I get up in the first place?”
The gorillas in the valleys in the south often lived together in groups of several tens.
They were fond of drinking wine, and even fonder of imitating man’s behavior.
People knew very well their habits and often put wine or distiller’s grains on the roadsidetogether with many straw sandals connected together with ropes.
The gorillas knew this was a trick to lure them into traps and cursed:
“Humph! Do you think we don't know your tricks? We’ll never be taken in!”
So they called one another, turned round and left.
But they had already smelled the aroma of the wine, and couldn’t bear to part with it.
Even after they left, they would turn their heads to look back. When they saw no one there, theywould turn back;and after they turned back,
就是走了,也要回过头来望望。回头望不见人,便又转过来;
they were afraid of being deceived, and left again. After much hesitation, they finally said tothemselves:
“Just for a taste of the wine. It won’t matter as long as we don’t get drunk.”
Shortly afterwards, they agreed to come back to drink the wine. When they got drunk, theyforgot everything.
Every gorilla put on the straw sandals and imitated the way man walks.
As a result, they fell down one after another and were all caught alive by people.
