男主角木光昆，生于1970年（庚戌年）11月11日。由于名字特殊，从小学到大学外号都叫“光棍”。他在南大读大二时和一名女生开始了一场恋爱。只是没想到，幸福是那么的短暂，女生突然查出患了绝症，最终离开人世。在她走的那天，木光昆跑到顶楼，点燃蜡烛，吹了一晚的笛子。从此，木光昆似乎变了一个人。
读大四那年的11月11日，也是他生日的那天，同宿舍的舍友们在南大第一宿舍的楼顶上陪他一起喝酒庆生。此后，关于木光昆的故事在南大流传开来，他的生日于是被定为“光棍节”。这个故事后来也被南大同学改编制作成校园微电影播出。
