A:Culture plays a very important role in the development of a country. There are many cultural differences between China and western countries. We should know not only about the Chinese culture but also the western culture .If not,a lot of misunderstanding will be made. Let’s see an example first.Chinese student:Mr.White, you are so pale, are you sick? English teacher:Well...yes.I have got a bad cold for several days. Chinese student:Well, you should go to a clinic and see the doctor as soon as possible. English teacher:Er...what do you mean?B:Well, in that case, cultural differenc caused a great misunderstanding. In China, people ask the unhealthy person to see a doctor in order to show their care , while on the contrary ,American will think of it as a disrespect .So ,let me show you the right demonstration.Chinese student:Mr.White, you are so pale, are you sick? English teacher:Well...yes.I have got a bad cold for several days. Chinese student:Oh ,I’m sorry to hear that。A:As what we saw, In America, a simple word “I’m sorry to hear that.” is enough to show you care.B:From this example ,we can easily find out the importance of knowing cultural differences. To know more about their culture can help us manage our communication with foreigners. Now,we will show another compare of China and America culture.English teacher: You can speak very good French.Chinese student: Where ,where ,I’m not good at all.English teacher: Oh ,it’s a wonderful dish.Chinese student: Over praise, over praise, forgive me my bad cooking.A:Modesty is a typical Chinese traditional morality.People in China always negates other’s praise to show their modesty. But in the view of the western countries, they think that Chinese are over modest .However, Americans are not as modest as Chinese. They are proud of their self-confidence.English teacher: You can speak very good French.Chinese student: Thank you.English teacher: Oh ,it’s a wonderful dish.Chinese student: I’m glad you like it.’B:So, when a foreigner praise you, just say “Thank you ”but not “No, I don’t think so.” It’s extremely unpiloted to westerners.A:We have show many examples of cultural difference .Now, Let’s have a contact with our classmate. Our group member will act a dialogue .Everyone who can guess out the meaning of the dialogue will get a small gift.English teacher: It is said that Jay zhou will hold a singing performance.Chinese student: Really? I’d like to take it with a grain of salt.B:Who knows the meaning please raise his hand.1yes,you got it.2Sorry,you are wrong.3It doesn’t matter,I will show you the meaning. “Take sth with a grain of salt” means doubt with sth or not 100% believe sth. A:On our study of a language, we should not only learn the grammar and vocabulary, but also pay more attention to the culture of the country.Only in this way can we really learn a language well.

The scars of love Some years ago on a hot summer day in south Florida a little boy decided to go for a swim in the old swimming hole behind his house. In a hurry to dive into the cool water,he ran out the back door, leaving behind shoes, socks, and shirt as he went. He flew into the water, not realizing that as he swam toward the middle of the lake,an alligator was swimming toward the shore. His mother - in the house was looking out the window - saw the two as they got closer and closer together. In utter fear, she ran toward the water, yelling to her son as loudly as she could. Hearing her voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a U-turn to swim to his mother. It was too late. Just as he reached her, the alligator reached him. From the dock, the mother grabbed her little boy by the arms just as the alligator snatched his legs. That began an incredible tug-of-war between the two. The alligator was much stronger than the mother, but the mother was much too passionate to let go. A farmer happened to drive by, heard her screams, raced from his truck, took aim and shot the alligator. Remarkably, after weeks and weeks in the hospital, the little boy survived. His legs were extremely scarred by the vicious attack of the animal and,on his arms, were deep scratches where his mother‘s fingernails dug into his flesh in her effort to hang on to the son she loved. But sometimes we foolishly wade into dangerous situations. The swimming hole of life is filled with peril - and we forget that the enemy is waiting to attack. That‘s when the tug-of-war begins - and if you have the scars of His love on your arms be very, very grateful.

The First Ball Games
The first interesting thing for sports use was the ball.
In ancient Egypt, as in everywhere,
throwing stones was a favorite children's game.
But a stone could hurt a child.
Looking for something less dangerous to throw,
the people in Egypt made, perhaps, the first balls.
At first, balls were made of grass or leaves held together
Later they made balls with animals' skin.
They put the pieces of animals' skin together with thread
and put in some birds' feathers or grass.
This kind of ball was soft and not heavy.Everyone liked to play with it.
Although the people in Egypt liked fighting and wars,
they tried to save time for sports games.
Before long they could play a lot of new ball games, each with its own rules.
Perhaps they thought
the games were useful to help the young men run faster in wars.
Partying with Foreigners
Partying is fun.But have you ever been invited to a party by a foreigner?
What should you wear?
Should you bring anything?
If so,what?
Don't worry.
Today we are going to give you some tips about partying with foreigners.
First, you should ask if it is a formal or casual party.
Then you will know what to wear.
It's as simple as that.
At a casual party, it is customary to bring a bottle of wine or some other refreshment.
It is not considered polite to bring someone along with you unless you first ask your host.
At more formal parties like birthdays,a small gift will be sufficient.
Giving money would cause some embarrassment.
Finally,never overstay your welcome.
When it's getting late,it's time to thank you host for a wonderful evening and say good night.
Valentine's Day
情人节
Valentine's Day is named for Saint Valentine,
an early Christian churchman who reportedly helped young lovers.
Valentine was executed for his Christian beliefs
on February 14 more than 1700 years ago,
but the day that has his name is even earlier than that.
More than 2000 years ago,the ancient Romans celebrated a holiday for lovers.
As part of the celebration,
girls wrote their names on pieces of paper and put them in a large container
Boys reached into the container and pulled one out.
The girl whose name was written on the paper
became his lover of sweetheart for a year.
Lovers still put their names on pieces of paper
and send each other Valentine's Day cards that tell of their love.
Sometimes they send gifts, like flowers or chocolate candy.
Americans usually send these gifts and cards through the mail system.
But some use another way to send this message.
They have it printed in a newspaper. The cost is usually a few dollars.
Some of these messages are simple and short:
"Jane,I love you very much.Peter."
Others say more. This one for example:"Dan Roses are red, violets are blue.
I hope you love me as much as I love you.Forever,Mary."
Most of the news- papers that print such messages are local,
but one,USA Today,
is sold throughout the United States and 90 other countries as well.
This means someone can send a Valentine messages to a lover
in far away city or town almost anywhere in the world.
These massages cost$80 and more.
An employee of the USA Today
says readers can have a small heart or rose
printed along with their messages nowadays.
Will this kind of Valentine's Day message reach the one you love?
Well, just make sure he or she reads the newspaper.
