To the Chinese people it is as important as Christmas to people in the West. The dates for this annual celebration are determined by the lunar calendar rather than the Gregorian calendar, so the timing of the holiday varies from late January to early February. To the ordinary Chinese, the festival actually begins on the eve of the lunar New Year's Day and ends on the fifth day of the first month of the lunar calendar. But the 15th of the first month, which normally is called the Lantern Festival, means the official end of the Spring Festival in many parts of the country.

The Spring Festival, the Lunar New Year, is the first year of the year and also the traditional "New Year's Day".

Spring Festival has a long history, which evolved from the first year of prayer in ancient times.

During the Spring Festival, various activities are held throughout the country to celebrate the Spring Festival, with a lively and festive atmosphere.

There is a legend about the origin of the Spring Festival.

In ancient China, there was a monster called Nian, with long antennae and unusual ferocity.

Nian lived deep in the sea for many years.

He did not climb ashore until New Year's Eve, devouring livestock and hurting people's lives.

Therefore, on New Year's Eve, people take the old and the young to escape to the mountains to avoid the harm of the Nian.

Later on New Year's Eve, an old beggar from outside the village told people how to drive out the Nian.

Originally, Nian was most afraid of red, fire and explosion.

Since then, every New Year's Eve, families stick red couplets and set off firecrackers.

Households have bright candles and wait for the new year.

In the early morning of the Eleventh day, we have to go to relatives and friends to say hello.

This custom has become the most solemn traditional festival among Chinese people.

It is the year of rabbit. The festival falls on the first day of the first lunar month (usually in late January and early February), and ends with Lantern Festival which is on the 15th day.The festival is celebrated grandly and extensively across the country. Various cultural activities such as Fireworks Dragon Dancing, Lion Dancing and other traditional performances, are arranged in parks and streets in cities and towns. Every family thoroughly cleans the house, sweeps the floors and washes daily things. House cleaning is believed to drive away ill-fortune and bring good luck in the coming year. Windows and doors are decorated with red paper-cuts and couplets. See New Year decorations.Chinese New Year is a time for families to be together. A reunion dinner is held on New Year's Eve, when New Year food including Chinese dumplings and spring rolls is eaten. From the first day of the New Year to the 15th day, Chinese people go to visit friends and relatives. New year greetings are given to each other, and lucky money is given to children to bring them good luck. The new year period is the busiest travel time. If you choose to travel during this period, you need to make full preparations and have your trip arranged as early as possible.
