在坐具当中，家具凳子，马扎是最早出现的，它是凳子的前身，在凳子上加一个靠背就衍变成为了椅子。凳子在民间的称谓叫杌凳。最初用来踩踏上马，上轿时使用，所以也称马凳，轿凳。凳子的用料简单，用途广泛，所以比椅子流传的数量大。凳子的形状很丰富，出现的早期是长方形，一直延续到明代，到了清代变成了方形，还出现了圆形，扇面形，梅花形，六角形的凳子。
