死神是民间传说，并非单属于任何一种西方宗教。中世纪的死神不是Hades，Hades好比阎王爷，坐在殿里升堂而已。
它的来源非常的复杂，融入了各个西方大陆民族的传说，而且还有中东古教的文化，所以他并没有确定的名字(当然关于他名字和起源的传说很多，但没有哪个真正有说服性，因为民间传说这样的东西根本就没有根源可询)。
