secret understanding 暗地里的协议 understanding: an informal agreement between people 一个非正式的协议,谅解心照不宣:彼此心里明白,而不公开说出来。也指互相之间明白或共同认可一件事物,做相同的判断。只看这句英语,secret understanding是指默认协议,互相理解的意思,但心照不宣却可以表达多种意思,包括了协议,心有灵犀,做相同决定等的意思,所以反过来只看中文时,英文想要表达出来的意思不一定能被中文传达到位,读者看中文时可能会理解成其他意思。我觉得这里翻译得看上下文语境决定能不能用心照不宣。
