除夕原意为岁除，指岁末除旧布新，除夕的英文也特别简单，就是Chinese New Year's Eve。年的最后一天称为岁除，那天晚上除夕，除夕自古就有祭祖、守岁、团年饭、贴年红、挂灯笼等习俗。

除夕夜在英文中有6种可表达的方式：
平时较为常用也正规的是New Year's Eve，在英文中，eve读为[iːv] 中文意思其中有：前夕，傍晚，重大事件关头；新的一年的前夕（eve）便是除夕夜。
