选用的系统听力材料，内容最好不要超出所学词汇和语法范围，由浅入深，循序渐进。听得懂，才有听下去的兴趣。听这类材料要精听，遇到困难的语音、词、句可以停下录音机，把磁带倒回重听，直到把全部内容听懂理解为止；除此之外，还应选用一些其他辅助听力材料，最好内容不要超出所学词汇和语法范围，由浅入深，循序渐进。听的过程中不必停顿，听懂大意就行。这类泛听材料可以广泛一些，文章、故事、对话、采访、报告等等，凡是适合自己听力水平的材料均可用来泛听。无论听哪种材料，听之前最好不要先看文字材料（练习除外），应先把录音内容听一遍，了解大意，听的时候要集中精力，大脑的反应要尽量跟上录音速度。在听的过程中常会遇到这种情况，有些词听上去很熟，但一下子想不起是什么意思，或者有些词听上去很陌生。这时不要停下来去想，否则会影响听下面的内容。在有问题时可回想一下，看是否能从上下文推测出其含义。再者，不必把每个词都要弄个清清楚楚，有些并不影响理解的词可以忽略。另外，不要听一句，脑子里翻译一句，要尽量做到思维跟上录音材料的速度，听得懂材料里说了些什么，目的也就达到了。对于那些只有听一次机会的听力内容，如电视、广播的英语节目，一开始可能听不懂什么，要坚持听，只要听个大概也就行了。
