Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice is a lighthearted tale of love and marriage in eighteenth-century England. It centers on the elder sisters of the Bennet family, Jane and Elizabeth. Their personalities, misunderstandings and the roles of pride and prejudice play a lavishing story. This story is told from third point of view. From my perspective Jane Austen wanted to convey love wins over prejudice and to not just take in the saying of first impression but to look in the person's character deeper. Jane Austin was born in 1775 in Stevenson, Hampshire. Her family wasn't rich but managed to give her a decent education. She was the seventh of eight children of her father, a clergyman. Like other young women of her social class, Jane and her sister Cassandra were educated mostly at home in subjects of music, drawing, painting, needlework, and social behavior. Her father's encouragement and her own enjoyment in reading led Jane to became very well read. At fourteen she began to write little plays for home theatricals. She also wrote nonsense story's to entertain her family. Jane would spend the majority of the evening in the corner of the room with her manuscript and blotter observing the world surrounding her. She would write when the room was quiet and if she were interrupted, she would cover her manuscript with a blotter and continued when the room was silent again. Before Jane Austen died of cancer in 1817 at Winchester, she had already published six successful novels: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Northanger Abbey, Mansfield Park, Emma, and Persuasion, respectively. Jane Austen is now buried in the ancient cathedral in Winchester of her native Hampshire. Pride and Prejudice lets you travel through lives back then but also she portrays the lives of modern days. You can read it and you might be able to recall some parts of the book as your life, but in a different time period
A Book Report of The Black Tulip

I have recently read the simplified version of The Black Tulip published by Shanghai Translation Press. This novel was written by the distinguished French writer Alexandre Dumas Pere, the pioneer of the Romanticism Literature Movement in France. He was so popular that his works had been translated into several languages and welcomed by readers all over the world.
This novel took 17th century Dutch bourgeois revolutionary period of intense political struggle and the turbulent life as its background.
This gist of the story is as follows. The leading role Cornelius is a young doctor who completely doesn’t inquire about politics. He loves growing tulips and is trying to cultivate a black tulip without any other color on it at all. In order to obtain the considerable bonus offered by the government to the first man who cultivates the very kind of black tulip, Boxtel, Cornelius’
neighbor, tries to destroy and steal the bulbs of Cornelius, even kill him. Fortunately, Cornelius in the prison gets acquainted with the prison-keeper’s daughter Rosa and they fall in love. Under Rosa’s help, Cornelius realized his dream and achieves happiness at last.
It’s firmly believed by some people that when you become rich and successful, happiness will naturally follow. After reading this novel, I believe that nothing is further from the truth. To my mind, the secret to happiness lies in your successful work, in your contribution towards others’ happiness and in your wealth you have earned through your own honest efforts.
Firstly, in order to obtain happiness, you should achieve your successful work, in order to achieve your successful work, you should go through thick and thin. As the writer said, “those who have suffered much, have a right to be happy.” Take the two leading characters for example. They eventually reach happiness after suffering a lot both psychologically and physiologically. Secondly, your happiness should live in your contribution towards others’ happiness, but not on the contrary, in destroying others’ happiness. If you get your happiness by taking advantage of others or by hurting others, you won’t be happy with it for long, at least, you won’t enjoy the real happiness. People will think you’re a mean person. Boxtel was a typical case. He would never gain happiness.
Thirdly, wealth obtained through dishonest means doesn’t bring happiness. Happiness is not an end, it is a process. It’s a continuous process of honest and productive work which makes a real contribution to others and makes you feel you are a useful and worthy person.

My Impressions of A Farewell to Arms————my understanding of the endingAfter I have finished reading A Farewell to Arms, I was kind of trapped into some serious thoughts. Why? Why the author gave us such a sad ending when every reader hopes that the two characters of the novel can live a peaceful and happy life? Why he gave us a hope but tore it so cruelly? Of course we can understand that the author wanted to use this way to show the cruelty of the world, to appeal the everlasting hurt caused by the bloody war and the arms. However, is it a reasonable excuse to make us disappointed about the ending? What the earth is the book trying to tell us?Generally, A Farewell to Arms is about a beautiful but pathetic love story, a story of love and pain, of loyalty and desertion.Lieutenant Frederic Henry was a young American attached to an Italian ambulance unit on the Italian front during the time of World War I. He met an English nurse named Catherine Barkley and fell in love. Henry was sent to a hospital in Milan for an operation and Catherine was also there to help him recuperate. When Henry was heading back to the front again, he was told that Catherine was carrying their baby. When he executed his task, he was arrested by the Tagliamento military carabiniers. Though Henry was detained, in the dark of night he broke free, plunged into the river, and escaped on a log. Henry made his farewell to arms. Finally he found Catherine, and came to Montreaux, Switzerland. They led a happy and peaceful life there, waiting for the coming of their baby. However, the happy life didn’t last ever after. Catherine gave birth to a dead baby and she had had a hemorrhage herself. There was nothing Henry could do, no one he could talk to, no place he could go. Catherine was dead. He left the hospital and walked back to his hotel in the dark. It was raining.Then here again is the question, why the story leads to such a sorrowful ending?In my opinion, the tragedy is written. This novel is a look at war. As the novel and the war progress together, the varnish of honor, duty, adventure, and patriotism drift away from the lives of the Lieutenant Henry and the supporting characters. What's left is fear and disillusionment. Many of us would regard it as a perfect ending if it had stopped at the part of the reunion of Henry and Catherine. However, the truth is, life isn’t also a romantic fairy tale. War is such a ridiculous thing that soldiers fire their weapons with their tears and confessions. Nobody knows what they are fighting for, or what they are celebrating for.All the wars will be over one day, but the grief and wounds it brings us will be there forever. They also hope that the flag of their country could be the first to wave in the sky of the South Pole. In the end, the Norwegians were the first with their captain Amundsen. But the Britain team with their captain Scott died in the Antarctica. Robert Scott and his friends were dead in the Antarctica, but they showed their spirit: always be brave and confident; never give up. We should do everything confidently. There are many difficulties in our study, work and life. But we should be brave, and have courage. We should go on along our road. Then we can see the hope. We’ll succeed. But you know, many people give up when they face difficulties. They think that: ‘I can’t go over this difficulty. I must go back.’ That’s wrong. All of us have this ability to overcome difficulties. 5. The real beauty When I became a 12-year-girl, I started to pick on my appearance. I didn’t like to stand in front of the mirror, and I was really self-contemptuous. I thought I don’t have big enough eyes, or a slim and tall figure. But when I read the article by Chang Mengsu, I changed my thought. The topic of the article is “Beauty is only skin deep”. Chang Mengsu cared too much about her appearance before. She realized the real beauty from Mr. Hawking. Now, she knows physical figure is unimportant; we can become beautiful inside ourselves. We have to stop worrying about our appearance. To to be happy, be confident, find our true selves and build up our inner beauty can make us really beautiful. Her article led me to think about the real beauty again. She’s right. So, I thought of some successful people and the people around me. I think Pan Changjiang is a good example. He is very short and not handsome. But he is confident. As an comic actor, he brings a lot of fun to audiences all over our country. Everyone thinks that he is really lovely. Another example is J.K. Rowling. When she was young, she was very needy and had poor eyesight. Some children liked to laugh at her. But Rowling is brave and gritty. When Rowling published her series of Harry Potter, she became very rich and happy. All of her readers like her very much and they don’t care of her appearance. Pan Changjiang’s and Rowling’s stories tell me, the real beauty is in the heart. I will be beautiful as long as I have good qualities. I am not good-looking, never mind. I have a good sense of humour, I am very kind, and these good characters make me beautiful. Now, I like my own self. Every morning, I smile to myself in the mirror. I say to the mirror, “Look, what a beautiful girl!”
