定语从句基本概念
在复合句中,修饰名词或代词的从句叫定语从句。
引导定语从句的词叫关系词。
被修饰的名词或代词叫先行词。定语从句一般放在先行词的后面。

引导定语从句的关系词有关系代词和关系副词。
常见的关系代词包括that, which, who(宾格whom,所有格whose),as 等。
关系副词包括where, when, why等。关系代词和关系副词放在先行词及定语从句之间起连接作用,同时又作定语从句的重要成分。

定语从句的分类
根据定语从句与先行词的关系,定语从句可分为限制性定语从句及非限制性定语从句。
1. 限制性定语从句紧跟先行词,主句与从句不用逗号分开,从句不可省去。例如:
Any man that / who has a sense of duty won’t do such a thing.
任何有责任感的人都不会做这样的事。
2. 非限制性定语从句主句与从句之间有逗号分开,起补充说明作用,如省去,意思仍完整。例如:
The house,which we bought last month,is very nice.
这幢房子很漂亮,是我们上个月买的.
注意:非限定性定语从句中不能使用关系代词 that。

关系代词的用法
1. that
that既可以用于指人,也可以用于指物。在定语从句中作主语、宾语或表语,作宾语可省略。例如:
Mary likes music that is quiet and gentle.
玛丽喜欢轻柔的音乐。(that作主语)
The coat (that) I put on the desk is blue.
我放在桌子上的那件外套是蓝色的。(that作宾语)
2. which
which 用于指物,在句中作主语、宾语或表语,作宾语可省略。例如:
The building which stands near the train station is a supermarket.位于火车站附近的那座大楼是一家超市。(作主语)
The film (which) we saw last night was wonderful.
我们昨天晚上看的那部电影很好看。(作宾语)
3. who, whom
who, whom 用于指人,who 用作主语和表语,whom用作宾语。在口语中,有时可用who代替whom,也可省略。例如:
The girl who often helps me with my English is from England.
经常在英语方面帮助我的那个女孩是英国人。(who 作主语)
Who is the teacher (whom) Li Ming is talking to?
正在与李明谈话的老师是谁?(whom 作宾语)
4. as
① 引导限定性定语从句时,指与先行词相似的人或物,必须用于 such/so...as...或 the same...as...结构中,例如:
Such people as were mentioned by him were honest.
被他提到的这样的人是诚实的。
Last term our maths teacher set so difficult an examination problem as none of us worked out.
上学期我们数学老师出了一道我们没有一个人会的数学题。
This is the same bag as I lost yesterday.
这是和我昨天买的包一样的包。
② 引导非限定性定语从句时,只能修饰句子,可置于被修饰句子后面、前面或主谓之间,翻译成“正如...那样”例如:
The earth moves around the sun, as we all know.
As we all know,The earth moves around the sun.
The earth, as we all know, moves around the sun
③ 在非限制性定语从句中,which和as引导定语从句时的区别:
a. which引导的从句不能放在主句前,而as引导的从句则既可以放在主句前,也可以放在主句后,还可以放在主谓之间。
b. as和which都可以指代一个句子,但as有“正如”、“就像”之意,which则没有此含义。
c. as 引导的非限定定语从句只能修饰句子,which 引导的非限定性定语从句可以修饰句子,也可以修饰名词。
注意:
1. 当定语从句中含有介词,介词放在句末时,who,whom, that,which可省略,但介词在关系代词前时,只能用“介词+which/whom”结构。例如:
This is the house in which we lived last year.
这是我们去年居住的房子。
Please tell me from whom you borrowed the English novel.
请告诉我你从谁那借的这本英文小说。
2. 含有介词的固定动词词组中,介词不可前置,只能放在原来的位置上。例如:
This is the person whom you are looking for.
这就是你要找的那个人。
3. 关系词只能用that的情况:
① 先行词被序数词或形容词最高级所修饰,或本身是序数词、形容词最高级时,只能用that,而不用which.例如:
He was the first person that passed the exam.
他是第一个通过考试的人。
当先行词指人时,偶尔也可以用关系代词who。
② 被修饰的先行词为all, any, much, many, everything, anything, none, the one等不定代词时,只能用that,而不用which.例如:
Is there anything that you want to buy in the shop?
你在商店里有什么东西要买吗?
当先行词指人时,偶尔也可以用关系代词who。
③ 先行词被the only, the very, the same, the last, little, few 等词修饰时,只能用that,而不用which。例如:
This is the same bike that I lost.
这就是我丢的那辆自行车。
注意: 当先行词指人时,偶尔也可以用关系代词who。例如:
Wang Hua is the only person in our school who will attend the meeting.
王华是我们学校唯一将会出席这个会议的人。
④ 先行词里同时含有人或物时,只能用that.例如:
I can remember well the persons and some pictures that I saw in the room.
我能清楚记得我在那个房间所见到的人和一些照片。
⑤ 以who或which引导的特殊疑问句,为避免重复,只能用that.例如:
Who is the girl that is crying?
正在哭泣的那个女孩是谁?
⑥ 主句是there be 结构,修饰主语的定语从句用that,而不用which.例如:
There is a book on the desk that belongs to Tom.
桌子上那本书是汤姆的。
4. 关系词只能用which,而不用that 的情况:
①先行词为that, those时,用which, 而不用that.例如:
What’s that which is under the desk?
在桌子底下的那些东西是什么?
②关系代词前有介词时,用which,而不用that.例如:
This is the room in which he lives.
这是他居住的房间。
③引导非限制性定语从句,用which, 而不用that.例如:
Tom came back, which made us happy.

关系副词的用法
1. when指时间,其先行词表示时间,在句中作时间状语。例如:
This was the time when he arrived.
这是他到达的时间。(when=at which)
2. where指地点,其先行词表示地点,在句中作地点状语。例如:
This is the place where he works.
这是他工作的地点。(where=at /in which)
3. why 指原因,其先行词是原因,起原因状语作用。例如:
Nobody knows the reason why he is often late for school.
没人知道他为什么上学总迟到。(why=for which)

1、注音标(Phonetics),标重音(Stress)。
每单元的英语课文都有不少生词、一词多音和容易读错的英语单词,某些英语单词作名词和动词的发音不同,如'record(n.)和re'cord(vt.)。将英语音标和重音记在被注的单词上边,并要求学生在朗读课文时重视所注的音标和重读音节。这样,一旦课文读熟,那些单词的正确读音也就熟记在心了。
2、释义(Paraphrase)。
英语中有不少生词、多义词、短语、习惯语和难句需要用简单的英语或汉语来解释。如:quarrel争吵(to argue or disagree angrily with someone);forture财富(great wealth)。在课文学习过程中,注释的重点是一些较难的名词、短语和重点句型,而不必每个句子都解释。注释文字书写位置的原则是“就近”,即尽可能记在被解释的单词旁边,以便在阅读课文时被注视。若解释的英文单词较多,原文旁边写不下或记下去因单词太多书写太密而不清晰时,可记在相对较近的空白处,注释文字与被注文字之间可划一直线连接。也可记录在词汇表中该单词的后面。
3、划重点(Language Points)。
我指导学生用五角星标出新句型、用三角形标出旧句型、用圆圈标出介词或冠词、用方框标出新的短语和词组、用直线或水浪曲线划出英语课文中的关键句,科普文、议论文中表明作者中心论点的句子。语法和练习中的一些重点、难点也该划出来,以便引起重视。4、提要(Guideline)。
即用简洁的英文概括提示课文或段落、或句子的要点。这一工作常常与上述几项结合起来进行,先在原文上作上线条、小圆圈之类的标记,再在旁边空白处写上要提示的文字。例如,现在使用的高中英语教材每一单元阅读课文的正文前面都有“预习提示”(包括课文的重点生词和要讨论的问题),课文的后面常要求学生作简要笔记Note Making ;这是教材编辑为方便学生预习而编写的内容。我要求学生在自学课文时,先从这些“预习提示”入手,以便把握预习的重点。然后再根据“提示”去预习正文。如高二(下)第十四单元Satellite(卫星)是一篇科普文章,学生可以根据“预习提示”和Note Making把课文分为四个段落,我指导学生在各段落旁分别写上Broadcasting satellite(广播卫星),Weather Satellite(气象卫星),Communication Satellite(通讯卫星),Space Satellite(太空卫星)。这样,“预习提示”所述的课文要点就概括、凸现出来了,课文的段落大意和中心思想也一清二楚了。
4、标疑(Question)。
英语不是我们的母语,因此,在英语学习过程中,我们常常会碰到许多问题。阅读过程中可以在有问题的地方打一个问号,再寻找机会向老师或同学求教或查阅有关参考书解疑。
5、分析难点(Comprehension)。
学生阅读英语课文,不断会遇到一些难点,经过老师的讲解,或与同学一起讨论有些可能当场已经完全理解,有的还似懂非懂。不管怎样,边听边记下析难的文字,既有利于课后消化,也有利于复习回顾。
6、补缺(Replenishment)。
英语词汇表和一些参考书中对某些单词和词组的解释不够全面,有些只讲了名词的意思,而未说明作动词、形容词等的意义。老师应该让学生自己查词典或告诉他们别的用法,并让他们记录下来。比如学习了名词success(成功),应该让他们记下形容词successful、副词successfully和动词succeed。

在英语语言中,为了使语言简洁明了,重点突出或上下文紧密相连,可以省去某些 句子 成分而保持句子愿意不变,这种语言现象称之为省略。现就英语中的种.种省略现象分析如下:
一、并列复合句中的省略
在并列句中后边的分句可以省略与前边分句中相同的成分。如:
a) The boy picked up a coin in the road and (the boy ) handed it to a policeman. 这个男孩在马路上拾起一枚硬币并把他交给了警察。
b) Your advice made me happy but(your advice made) Tom angry .你的建议使我高兴但使汤姆生气。
c) Tom must have been playing basketball and Mary (must have been)doing her homework. 汤姆肯定一直在打 篮球 ,玛丽一直在写作业。
d) Gao Xiumin was born in 1959 and Fu Biao (was born) in 1963.高秀敏出生于1959年,傅彪出生于1963年。
二、主从复合句中的省略
1.状语从句中的省略
一般说来省略现象多出现在下列五种状语从句中:由 when ,while ,as ,before, after , till, until, once等引导的时间状语从句;由whether ,if , unless 等引导的条件状语从句;由though , although ,even if ,whatever等引导的让步状语从句;由 as ,than 等引导的比较状语从句;由as, as if , as though 等引导的方式状语从句。上述状语从句在省略时应遵循下面原则:
1) 当状语从句的主语与主句的主语一致时,可以省略状语从句的主语和系动词be,这时从句中可出现如下结构:(1) 连词(as, as if , once)+ 名词; (2) 连词( though, whether , when)+形容词;(3) 连词(whether, as if ,while )+介词短语;(4) 连词(when , while , though )+ 现在分词; (5) 连词
(when ,if ,even if ,unless ,once ,until, than , as ) + 过去分词; (6) 连词(as if ,as though ) + 不定式。如:
a) Once (he was)a worker ,Pang Long now becomes a famous singer .庞龙曾经是个工 人,现在变成一位著名的歌手。
b) Work hard when (you are) young ,or you'll regret.趁年轻要努力学习,要不然你会后悔的。 c) He looked everywhere as if (he was)in search of something .他到处看似乎在找什么东西。 d) While (he was) holding talks with President Hu Jintao ,US President George W. 注意:
1) 当从句的主语和主句的宾语一致时,间或也有这样的省略,如:
Her father told her to be careful when (she was)crossing the street.当她过马路时父亲告诉她要当心。
2) 当从句的主语是 it,谓语动词中又含有系动词be 时 ,可以把it和系动词be一起省略。此时构成连词(if , unless ,when , whenever)+形容词的结构。如:
Unless (it is) necessary ,you'd better not refer to the dictionary.如果没有必要,你最好不要查字典。
2.定语从句中的省略
1) 一般说来,在限制性定语从句中,作宾语的关系代词 that ,which , whom 可以省略;如:
Is this reason (that) he explained at the meeting for his carelessness in his work?这就是他在会上解释他工作中粗心的原因吗?(2002上海春季)
而在非限制性定语从句中作宾语的关系代词 which , whom 不可以省略。试比较:
Tom (whom) you saw yesterday fell ill.( whom可以省) 你昨天见到的汤姆病倒了。
Tom , whom you saw yesterday ,fell ill. ( whom不可以省) 汤姆病倒了,你昨天见到他了。
2)在口语和非正式用语中,关系副词when ,where , 和 why 经常用that 来代替,甚至还可省略。如:
a) This is the first time (when/that)he had trouble with the boss.这是他第一次麻烦老板。 b) He wants to find a good place (where/that) we can have a picnic during the “golden week ”holiday .他想找一个能在黄金周期间野餐的好地方。
c) Could you tell us the reason (why/that)he was so unhappy ? 你能告诉我们他为什么如此不高兴吗?
3)当先行词为表示方式的 the way 时 ,从句不能用 how 来引导 ,应该用that 或 in which ,或将它们全部省略。如:
I don't like the way (that/in which) you laugh at her.我不喜欢你嘲笑他的行为。
3.宾语从句中的省略
1)在及物动词后面所接的宾语从句中,连词that 一般可以省略;但如果及物动词后面是由that引导的两个或两个以上的并列的宾语从句 ,那么只有第一个that可以省略。如:
a) I think (that) the reform of the renminbi's exchange rate is necessary. 我认为人民币兑换率的改革是必要的。
b) He said (that)the Anti-secession law had been passed and that President Hu Jintao had signed a presidential order 他说《 反分裂国家法》已被通过,而且胡锦涛主席已签署了主席令。
2)由 which , when ,where , how,和 why 引导的 宾语从句,可以全部或部分省略。如:
a) I know that NBA star Yao Ming will come to our city but I don’t know when (he will come to our city).我知道NBA明星要到我们城市来但我不知道他什么时候来。
b) He wants to move abroad but his parents wonders why (he wants to move abroad)他想搬迁到国外但他的父母想知道为什么。
4.在与suggest ,request ,order ,advise 等词相关的名词性从句中,须用虚拟语气形式“should +动词原形”,should可以省略。如:
Chirac, President of the Republic of France suggested that the China-France Culture Year (should) last long in various forms.法国总统希拉克建议中法 文化 年以各种各样的形式长期持续。
5.主句省略多用于句首。如:
(It is a ) Pity that I didn’t go to Mary's birthday party yesterday.很遗憾,我昨天没有去参加玛丽的生日聚会。
6.在答语中,主句可全部省略。如:
—Why were you absent from school last Friday ?—(I was absent from school)Because my mother was ill. —上周五你为什么没有上学? —因为我妈妈病了。
三、简单句中的省略
1.省略主语
1)祈使句中的主语通常被省略 如:
(You) Open the door, please. 请开一下门。
2) 其它 省略主语多限于现成的说法 如:
a) (I) Thank you for your help 谢谢你的帮助。
b) (It)Doesn’t matter.没关系。
2.省略主谓语或主谓语的一部分 如:
a) (There is) No smoking. 禁止抽烟
b) (Is there)anything else ? 还有其他事吗 ?
c) (You come)This way please.请这边走。
d) (Will you) Have a smoke ? 抽烟吗 ?
3.省略宾语 如:
—Do you know Mr. Li ? 你认识李先生吗?— I don’t know (him.) 我不认识他
4.省略表语 如:
—Are you thirsty ? 你30岁了吗? Yes , I am (thirsty). 是的,我是。
5.同时省略几个成分 如:
a) —Are you feeling better now? 你觉得好些了吗 ?—(I am feeling ) Much better (now) 好多了。
b) (I wish) Good luck (to you) .祝你好运/祝你顺利。
四、动词不定式省略,只保留to 的场合
1.不定式作某些动词的宾语时,这些动词常见的有:love, like, care, wish, hope, expect, prefer, refuse, mean , try , oblige , advise , persuade , agree , want , afford , forget , remember , try , manage等。如:
a)— You should have thanked her before you left . —I meant to ,but when I was leaving I couldn’t find her anywhere.—你本该在离开前谢谢她。—我本打算这么做,但当我就要离开的时候我却找不到她了。(2000上海春)
b) You can do it this way if you like to .如果你想做,你可以这么做。
2.不定式作某些动词的宾语补足语或主语补足语时,这些动词常见的有:ask , tell ,advise, force, persuade, wish, allow, permit , forbid ,expect, order ,warn 等。如 :
a) The boy wanted to ride his bicycle in the street ,but his mother told him not to. 男孩想在街上骑他的自行车,但他母亲不让。(NMET1995)
b) She wants to come but her parents won’t allow her to (come). 她想来,可是她父母不让。
3.不定式在句中作某些形容词的状语时,常见的形容词有:happy, glad ,eager , anxious , willing , ready 等。如:
— I will be away on a business trip .Could you mind looking after my cat ? — Not at all.I would be happy to (look after your cat). —我要出差,你能帮我照顾一下我的猫吗?—没关系,我很愿意。
4.不定式作某些复合谓语时,常见结构如:be able to, be going to, have to, ought to, used to等。如:
He doesn’t like fish but he used to 他现在不喜欢吃鱼,但过去喜欢。
五、动词不定式to 的省略
1.主语部分有to do ,系动词 is 或 was 时 ,作表语的不定式通常省去to。如:
The only thing you have to do is press the button.你必须做的惟一事情是按按钮。
2.作介词but ,expect ,besides 的宾语,前面又有实意动词 do时,不定式通常省去to. 如: He said that Chen Shuibian had nothing to do except push a pro-“independence” timetable.他说陈水扁除了推进支持“独立”的时间表外,什么也没有做。
3.主语部分暗含to do,表语中的不定式通常省去to。如:
All I want (to do) is go to school and study hard .我想要(做)的就是上学,努力学习。
4.当两个或多个不定式并列时,其后的不定式符号可以省略,但有对比关系时不可省略。如: It is easier to say than to do . 说起来容易,做起来难。
5.在would rather?than? 等结构中,不定式符号常常要省略. 如:
I would rather stay at home than go to see a film.我宁愿呆在家也不愿去看电影。
6.在see ,watch ,notice ,hear, listen to ,look at ,feel ,have, make, let ,observe 等词后作宾语补足语时省略不定式符号to;why (not) do 结构 中, 不定式不带to。如:
a) I saw her enter the room. 我看见她进入了房间
b) Why not join us ?为什么不加入到我们的行列里来呢?
六.其他一些省略结构
1.名词所有格修饰的名词,若表示住宅、店铺、教堂或上下文已暗示或明确指出过的事物时,常常可以省略。如:
We spent the weekend at the Mary's. 我们在玛丽家过的周末。
2.What和 how引导的感叹句中,常可省略主语 it 和be动词 如:
a) What a wonderful victory (it is ) for Tom ! 这对Tom来说是个多么大的胜利呀!
b) How beautiful (it is ) to be treated like a normal child. 被当作一个正常孩子对待对他而言是多么美妙的一件事呀。

一、一般过去将来时
1.概念:立足于过去某一时刻,从过去看将来,常用于宾语从句中。
2.时间状语:The next day (morning, year…),the following month(week…),etc.
3.基本结构:主语+was/were +going to + do+ 其它 ;主语+would/should + do+其它
4.否定形式:主语+was/were+not + going to + do; 主语+would/should + not + do.
5.一般疑问句:was或were放于句首;would/should 提到句首。
6.例句:He said he would go to Beijing the next day.他说他第二天要去北京。
I asked who was going there.我问,谁要去那里。
二、 现在进行时
1.概念:表示现阶段或说话时正在进行的动作及行为。
2.时间状语:Now, at this time, days, etc. look. listen
3.基本结构:主语+be +doing +其它
4.否定形式:主语+be +not +doing+其它
5.一般疑问句:把be动词放于句首。
6.例句:How are you feeling today?你今天感觉如何?

1. win, beat, defeat 表示获胜、取胜的词语
(1) win v. 赢……,获胜,接比赛或奖项 win a game / a prize / an honor / a race. / Our team won the game 8 to 7. / He won by five points. / He won her love at last. / He won the first place in the competition.
(2) beat + 对手,表打败(尤指体育比赛) I can easily beat him at golf.
(3) defeat 表战胜,接对手The enemy was defeated in the battle.
2. in the end, finally, at last
三者均可表示“(经过周折、等待、耽误)最后,终于”之意。不同的是:
finally 一般用在句中动词前面,而 at last 与 in the end 的位置则较为灵活;
三者中at last 语气最为强烈,且可单独作为感叹句使用。After putting it off three times, we finally managed to have a holiday in Dalian. / At last he knew the meaning of life. / At last! Where on earth have you been? / But in the end he gave in.
另外,finally还可用在列举事项时,引出最后一个内容,相当于lastly。 Firstly, we should make a plan; secondly, we should carry it out; finally we should make a conclu- sion.
3. by sea, by the sea, in the sea, on the sea, at sea
(1) by sea “走海路,乘船”,用来表示交通方式,同 by ship 同义。 These heavy boxes should be sent by sea.
(2) by the sea “在海边”,相当于 by (at) the seaside。The children enjoyed themselves by the sea on Children's Day.
(3) in the sea “在海里,在海水中” There are many plants and animals in the sea.
(4) on the sea “在海面上”,“在海岸边”。I want to live in a town with a beautiful position on the sea.
(5) at sea 在海上;在航海 When he woke up, the ship was at sea.
4. be afraid, be afraid to do sth., be afraid of (doing) sth.
(1) be afraid 意为“担心,害怕”,多用于口语,常用来表示一种歉意,或遗憾,后可接 so 或 not,也可接 that 从句。I'm afraid (that) 其语意相当于 I'm sorry, but...。
-- Are we on time? 我们准时吗? -- I'm afraid not. 恐怕不准时。I'm afraid you'll get caught in the rain.
(2) be afraid to do sth 常表示“由于胆小而不敢做某事”。She is afraid to be here alone. / He is afraid to jump into the river from the bridge.
(3) be afraid of (doing) sth. 常表示“担心或害怕某事(发生)”。I was afraid of hurting her feelings.
5. live, living, alive, lively
(1) live adj.
① 活的;活生生的;(只修饰生物;只作前置定语) The laboratory is doing experiments with several live monkeys.
② 实况直播的 (不是录音)It wasn't a recorded show. It was live.
③ 带电的;燃着的;可爆炸的 This is a live wire.
(2) living adj. 活着的,有生命的(作表语或定语) She was, he thought, the best living novelist in England. / The old man is still living. (或alive)
(3) alive adj. ① 活着的;② 有活力的;有生气
作后置定语:Who's the greatest man alive?
作表语:Was the snake alive or dead? / My grandmother is more alive than a lot of young people.
作补语:Let's keep the fish alive.
(4) lively adj. 活泼的;有生气的;活跃的(作表语或定语) The music is bright and lively.
