Yuan Longping was born in 1930. Since he graduated from Southwest Agricultural College in 1953, he has devoted his life to finding ways to grow more and more rice. As a young man, he sawthe great need for increasing the rice output.
At that time, hunger was a serious problem in many parts of the countryside. He searched for a way to increase rice harvests without expanding the area of the fields.
