舱外宇航服是在飞行员密闭服的基础上发展起来的多功能服装，可供航天员出舱活动或登月考察。
新宇航服可在零下约157摄氏度至零上约121摄氏度之间的温度条件下保护宇航员，使他们不受辐射、月尘和微流星体侵害。
研制历程：
早期的航天服只能供航天员在飞船座舱内使用，后研制出舱外用的航天服。现代新型的舱外用航天服有液冷降温结构，可供航天员出舱活动或登月考察。保障航天员的生命活动和工作能力的个人密闭装备。
可防护空间的真空、高低温、太阳辐射和微流星等环境因素对人体的危害。在空间的真空环境中，人体血液中含有的氮气会变成气体，使体积膨胀。如果人不穿加压气密的航天服，就会因体内外的压差悬殊而发生生命危险。
1969年“阿波罗11号”宇航员首次登月时，工作人员主要担心月壤能否支撑载人飞船着陆。但是现在人类已知月壤中藏着更大的风险，那就是其中有大量玻璃状碎屑，可能侵入宇航服中。因此新宇航服增加了防尘设计，避免月尘被吸入并污染生命支持系统。
