星宿说

古人将黄道与赤道附近的恒星分为“二十八星宿”。二十八宿也分别代表一种动物。古代将周天等分十二分，用十二支表示，而十二支配属生肖，生肖与二十八星宿存在对应关系。

明代大学士王鏊认为，二十八种动物配属二十八星宿，并“以七曜统之”，成“女土蝠，虚日鼠，危月燕，子也”的格局。 清代李长卿在《松霞馆赘言》认为，二十八宿配动物“即前十二属加一倍者也“，“亢金龙，辰官也，角木蛟附焉。蛟，龙类也”，体现十二生肖为基础凑齐二十八种星宿动物。 但该说难免有附会，二八星宿配动物的记载要晚于十二生肖。

图腾说

原始社会的先民常用某种动物、无生物或自然现象的图形作为本氏族的保护神和标志，即图腾。《山海经》诸如人和野兽的混合形象形象就是远古各地的图腾神。夏族的图腾是熊或鱼，商族的图腾是玄鸟，周族的图腾则有龙、鸟、龟、犬、虎诸说。

外来说

清代赵翼在《陔余丛考》中，“盖北俗初无所谓子丑寅卯之十二辰，但以鼠牛虎兔之类分纪岁时，浸寻流传于中国，遂相沿不废耳”，认定生肖的外来性质。

郭沫若在《释干支》中，认为生肖源于巴比伦的黄道十二宫，汉代西域诸国仿十二宫而造十二生肖。 古希腊、古埃及、巴比伦等古国也有类似的十二生肖，仅动物不同，由此生肖也许并非起源于中国。但秦简的出土推翻此说，世界各国都有类似的动物崇拜，反加强图腾说的合理性。
